I feel like it might just be me "prepping" for labor but all I want is carbs! I ate a giant plate of pasta and three pieces of bread last night and woke up craving pancakes and scones. Is anyone craving carbs with labor being so close?
Has your baby dropped? Maybe you just have more room for more of the filling foods? I know all those things sound good but I don't crave them because three bites and I'm full or have terrible heartburn.
@VesperLove I'm craving milk lately, too. I go through a 52oz thing almost every day. I am currently out and waiting on hubs to replenish the supply when he gets home from work.
I'm craving ice. It's so weird. I have never been someone who crunches ice cubes but the past few weeks I can't get enough! I guess I should be well hydrated. Annoying for the people around me I'm sure
@VesperLove yeah, he's dropped. It's weird though because I seem to have endless room for carbs but protein is still giving me heartburn. I just feel like labor is really close. I have a feeling at my appointment today my doctor will end up sending me L&D.
Yes to the milk! I joke that my love of milk is why his kicks hurt so bad. I've made his bones too strong! And yes to ice. Currently chomping on some yummy sonic ice. I craved pasta in the first trimester but honestly right now I only eat because I have to.
I never,, ever drank milk before I got pregnant, in fact, if we had some in the house it went bad before it was finished. I've been going through so much milk this entire pregnancy its almost scary. I've been craving carbs for awhile though, mostly in the form of sweet carbs.
Something to keep in mind: craving ice is a form of pica which I have also been craving the last few weeks. At My last OB visit the dr. had me do another cbc test... Turns out I have low iron scores and was put on Otc iron supplement which does not help the constipation at all:/ lately all I want is cinnamon rolls and biscuits.
Carbs are pretty easy to digest which is why they are the first thing you can keep down again after getting an upset stomach. Carbs are also quick energy so you tend to crave them when you are tired, and at the end of the 3rd trimester--who isn't tired?
Carb loading is actually more complicated than just upping your carb intake, to actually load carbs you typically need to do a hard but fast workout to deplete your glycogen stores and eat carbs intentionally within a certain time period afterwards to increase glycogen storage above your baseline. The workout is typically anaerobic that accomplishes this because when you switch into aerobic workout you start burning fat which is not your goal during carb loading.
Yes, I was going to say the thing about craving ice being a form of pica. You might mention it to your dr at your next appointment to see if you have low levels of anything your body might need.
Same thing with milk and ice cream!!!! No carbs for me cause of heart burn. I'm actually usually lactose intolerant but it makes me feel better right now.
I'm with @esscapelle . If craving carbs was a sign that labor was close, I've been on the verge of labor since I could walk. It's no better when pregnant, either. And my ongoing mild aversion to meat doesn't help the situation either, haha.
@ATolentino89 Most people assume that carb loading is what you described and in all reality the difference isn't a big deal in laymens terms.
Carbs get a lot of bad press but they are the preferred fuel source of your brain and muscles. So it is natural to crave carbs if you need energy or are tired (let's be honest at 36+ weeks pregnant we are all tired and need energy!). Also since things are squished in there we are probably enjoying the fact that carbs are easy to digest.
I'm trying really hard to stay away from the sweets and eat protein. I know its time for baby to bulk up but I'm afraid I'm gonna regret my choices in a month. Lol
I mean, I can always and forever just eat carbs but I feel like something must be going on with me/my baby the past 2 days because I'm all of the sudden constantly famished. I literally got out of bed at 2:30am last night to eat something because it was so unbearable, and then needed to eat again at 6am! I've never been this way...do babies have growth spurts in there this late?

<---is miserable, lol</p>
Maybe this is what's going on with me! I was watching The Leftovers on HBO yesterday and there's a scene where the guy wakes up in this really sandy dirt, and the dirt looked so freaking good. I remember hearing that craving dirt as being a form of pica too.
Re: Carb loading?
I craved pasta in the first trimester but honestly right now I only eat because I have to.
Also: anything dairy. Cheese, milk, yogurt makes me happy

Oh pregnancy. You so funny.
