Gasping for air?

Does your baby gasp for air??? My 9 wk old son gasps for air throughout the day. Not in a really concerning way, although sometimes it's a long loud gasp. And then sometimes they're short gasps.

Re: Gasping for air?

  • Mine does this periodically at night, when he's in a heavy sleep.  But I thought it was more of a teeny, tiny newborn thing, esp during the day.

If you've got any reservations at all, check in with his doc.

  • My 8 week old does the same during the day and sometimes at night while sleeping as well.

  • Yup, my 9 week old does this; mostly when he's sleeping. Occasionally during the day when he's awake he'll do it too. He's been doing it less as he gets older though.
  • Mine will when the wind blows by
  • My 12 week old girl does this. Is like a high pitched gasp. It scared me a lot at first! But now I know its just something she does and she's fine. :)
  • So I was at the pedi today and asked about this because my little girl does the same thing. She said that babies cartilage is very felixble and starts to harden up as they grow. The top of the windpipe is cartilage and can collapse when they take in a big breath, hence the gasp/noise. She said it's totally normal and very common
  • I've been using my phone to video tape things like this that are on my "ask the pediatrician" list ... Maybe you could do that and show the video at your apt, since it's likely that your little one won't actuall gasp for air during the apt - that way the doctor knows exactly what little one is doing.
