Feedings after long sleep stretches

My 6 week LO did the unthinkable and slept 7.5 hours last night! It was great until she spit up everywhere 5 minutes into our feeding. I'm thinking I should have pumped a little before she ate since I was incredibly engorged. Anyone lucky enough to have their little one sleep this long regularly and have advice about engorgement and feedings? Will your body just naturally adjust to going this long without feeding at night or will I always need to do some pumping first to help out my LO?
I'm hoping this wasn't just a fluke and I'll actually need this advice ;)

Re: Feedings after long sleep stretches

  • I've been having this problem. She'll go for long stretches and my boobs hurt so much. I hand express or pump a little to relieve the pressure then feed her. I pretty much always have to express a little in the morning so it doesn't choke her. I have been working on my supply do I can have a good stash when I go back to work. I guess it's working. I'm sorry I'm not of more help, though I don think that eventually your body will adjust to the timing.

  • I set my alarm to wake up and pump halfway through the night. The longest stretch I go is 5 hours. My LO doesn't typically sleep more than 3 hours at night.
  • My problem is inconsistency: Monday night LO had a 6h max stretch, then Tuesday night 2h, then Wednesday 5h and this night it was 2h again. Even though I pumped both times when he slept longer, I still feel it has affected my supply. This night he was frustrated by the slow flow, and I also didn't feel as engorged as previously...
  • I had this happen once myself but I also woke up to check on her. I decided to pump as I'd give her a bottle if she woke up to soon...glad I pumped I got 7.5 oz! She slept long enough that I didn't need to give her a bottle.
  • My baby sleeps 8 hours each night. I refuse to wake up to pump though so I pump 2 oz from each side so she can eat without drowning. Once she's done I will finish pumping and get about 9 oz total.
  • When this happens to me, I'll only let her nurse for a couple of minutes at a time and burp her ALOT! The only problem with this is she gets so mad at me when I pull her off! Sometimes I have to pump after feeding if my boobs are still engorged after feeding.
