Prenatal Yoga?

Has anyone else started prenatal yoga? I started on Saturday (9 weeks today) and I'm pretty excited about it, there is a yoga studio 3 blocks away from our condo and they have a huge focus on childbirth, mom and baby classes, pregnancy wellness, etc. I was the least far along in my pregnancy by a lot, but the other ladies told me that they wish they had started earlier. I'm mainly excited about the possibility of making mom friends, im the first of my local friends to get pregnant and since we are all late 30's/early 40's, I'm not sure how many will have kids.

Only thing is after one class, my lower back kills? I didn't think we did anything to strenuous, is this normal?

Re: Prenatal Yoga?

  • I love yoga!! Your back shouldn't be hurting that much; I would tell the instructor that it hurt you after the last class and he or she will give you modifications to help build your strength while protecting your muscles.

  • I went last pregnancy and I remember my back hurting the first time too. I mentioned it to the instructor the next time, and she would check me from time to time and help. It got better for me too. Enjoy!

  • I hated going to my prenatal yoga classes, but I did find it helpful to go back to that yoga breathing and stretching during the first few hours of my labor. Definitely talk to your teacher about the back pain -- the instructor I saw last time was really great about recognizing our individual needs and being proactive about modifications. The good prenatal yoga teacher in my area is on maternity leave right now, so I've been doing some of the GaiamTV prenatal videos, but once she goes back to teaching I'll go to class. One of my former prenatal yoga classmates is now in Mommy & Me ballet with us, which is a fun coincidence.

  • My neighbour (she's a few weeks behind me) & I were going to sign up for prenatal yoga, but then we found out a local pool offers prenatal water yoga...that's the route we'll be taking! We won't be starting until the new year but I'm already so excited for it.

  • My mom is a yoga teacher and taught prenatal yoga for awhile. She always advised her students to wait until the 2nd trimester to start yoga, not sure why. But I'll be starting a class in the new year, really looking forward to it.
  • I agree @MynaBird! I wish I lived somewhere cool enough to have awesome classes like that!
