IUD insertion experiences

So, I made my postpartum appointment today and plan to get an IUD placed. Can anyone share their experiences? The office did not say anything, but I read online that there can be a decent amount of pain during and after, and is usually less for women who have given birth. Would anyone say this is true? Do you think it will be a problem driving before/after due to pain? I also made the appointment on the same day as my office's Christmas party...bad idea? Thanks :)

Re: IUD insertion experiences

  • I bled fairy significant for 2 weeks following insertion. The insertion itself was like having a pap smear. I had horrible cramping afterward - like the cramps you get while breast feeding after having a baby. Those lasted only about 1-2 days though.

  • I have the same question - specifically for anyone who had a c-section and hasn't had a vaginal birth.
  • I had one for 4.5 years before I had a baby and the insertion was painful - bad cramping, legs shaking, hot flashes... I definitely struggled driving home that day!

Just got another one at my 6 week pp appointment 4 weeks ago and it was wayyyy better this time around. Mild cramping for a day, some sharp cramps after the first few minutes. No problems leaving this appointment and driving, but I did have my mom with me because the ladies at my midwife's office wanted to see the baby!

I didn't bleed at all the first time, but I did bleed this time even though my pp bleeding stopped around 1.5 weeks pp. Light bleeding and some clots.
  • Previous csection, only dilated to less than a 2. When I had mine inserted, it felt like a Pap smear. No cramping or bleeding at all. Removal 4.5 years later was a different story. Will be getting another one hopefully At my 6 week appointment and hoping for the same experience.
  • I had one put in and had not been pregnant beforehand and it was no pain at all. Removal was just as easy for me. Every experience is completely different so maybe prep with some Advil beforehand to be safe.
  • Thanks so much, everyone. I also had a c-section, didn't think it would make much of a difference, but if anyone else has input, great. I also planned on bringing the baby with me for the appointment (alone). I've seen women in the OB/gyn office with their babies before, hopefully this is not a terrible idea...
  • I had a vaginal birth but had one put in at 5 weeks pp. It's my first iud and my doctor warned me I could have bleeding for quite a while. She told me her first she bled for 10 straight weeks (spotting). But after the first one it usually isn't as bad. That was last week and I am still off and on bleeding but the cramps I had both while she was inserting and after were just like period cramps and the insertion itself barely felt like more than a pap smear. The cramps stopped after a day of two.
  • All I can say to my IUD experience was MEH and never again. Even though the feeling might be different experience since I had a baby but the insertion hurt as much as getting induced (imagine the Foley balloon going in) . I was curled up on the bed with major cramps. And I only had the IUD in for about 4 years, mostly because the cramps I would have from it felt nearly close to contractions that I had to leave work early because of it.
  • I just got mine today.  It hurt being put in, a little bleeding after.  Not really cramping but I did take some 800mg ibuprofen right after.
  • What type of iud's is everyone getting? My Dr told me about two different kinds. I'm considering the Mirena (sp?). Is this what most people are getting?
  • I had the Mirena put in after my first child. It didn't hurt at all. I don't even remember cramping. Had another put in this time and felt some very mild cramping. No problems driving at all. Some spotting though. Good luck.

Mirena is what my OB's office recommends and what I will get.
  • Mirena is what I had before and what I will have again. FWIW, my doctor won't do an IUD for a woman who hasn't had a baby due to the cramping. In her experience it is much more uncomfortable for women whose bodies haven't gone through pregnancy, even without a vaginal birth.
  • I had mirena before baby, and it hurt like a MOFO when I got it put in. Now after my first child, I just had another placed yesterday, 8 weeks After c-section. I was surprised i hardly felt it. Cramping and bleeding later that night but nothing horrible! Every body is different though!!
  • When I had mine inserted ... 4 years ago after a vaginal delivery, no pain, just a slight pinch ! Cramping afterwards, but nothing to worry about !
  • My doctor wont' even give it to me until i'm on my period, she says its a lot easier to go in and causes minimal cramping and pain when the cervix is more open. This seems to be a little uncommon based on when i've read others have had theirs inserted, but i'm guessing the closer to your period you get it inserted, the less pain you'll have, and that is why everyone has a different experience. I'm considering just having her do it whenever as i've yet to have a regular period. i've had 1 day of light bleeding TWICE since i've had my son 15 weeks ago, and she says its not enough to consider it a period. i'm tired of waiting and paranoid as heck!

This. My doctor said I have to be at least 10-12 weeks postpartum AND on my period.

My doctor is prescribing two doses of Cytotec to help soften/open the cervix before I have mine put in, since I haven't had a vaginal birth. I don't know if it would be the same if I had. Also he said no sex for two weeks prior.
  • Just wanted to add that I had my second IUD inserted 2 weeks ago at 6w PP. Very minor cramping day one and minor spotting for 2 days. All was well after that. I've not had a vaginal delivery.
