Soothing after shots

My LO has his 2 month shots tomorrow morning, and I am dreading it! I'm sure he will be fine, but I am definitely nervous. For those that have done the shots already, how did you soothe baby after? I'm thinking about feeding him right after to help. Thanks!

Re: Soothing after shots

  • I just held her and then fed her in doctors office right after which helped. I put Boo Boo Bunny (ice pack)on legs at injection sites once home. She didn't develop fever but was extremely upset at night so we gave her Tylenol and within 2 hours she was better.

  • We gave our babe a warm bath and some Tylenol, we also gently massaged the injection areas in the bath
  • I offered her a pacifier right after and held her, but she had a meltdown and I couldn't calm her down, poor baby, so eventually I loaded her in her car seat and carted her out to the car and she fell asleep on the ride home. She did get a fever a few hours later so next time we are definately doing Tylenol right after.
  • My lo let out a loud yelp when they stuck him, and then cried. But it wasn't any worse of a cry then normal. I just picked him up and cuddled him, and he was fine. They did offer to let me feed him when we were done, which I would have done if he didn't calm down right away. He did seem to be a little sore the next day so we gave him Tylenol a few times over the next 2 days.

Side note... I only did 2 shots, and will get the rest a in a few weeks... not sure if he would have gotten more upset if he had to have all of them.
  • Baby boy had all the recommended vaccinations. He cried for a couple seconds and stopped almost as soon as I picked him up from the table. I will say that he bled a lot from the TDaP (through 2 band aids and all over my shirt and his burp cloth) which made me sad, but I think he just takes after me and bleeds from needle pokes. No fever, some increased fussiness over the next 24 hours, but that was the extent of it. Really not traumatic at all.

  • My LO calmed down after I picked him up and cuddled him for a few seconds (while also shushing in a rhythm). He got one shot in each leg, and an oral one. I had given him a small amount of Tylenol just before we got there to try and combat any soreness from the injection and continued to give it to him over the next two days. He ended up reacting to one of the shots two days afterward, because it was a live virus, and we rushed back to the doctor after he was inconsolable and crying so hard he could hardly breathe. We finally got him calmed down and he's all better now!
Also, my best friend has suggested putting hot hands on his legs before and after to help him relax. Since my doctor told me giving LO Tylenol in the first 24 hours afterward is apparently frowned upon (unless they are super uncomfortable).

To be honest, I expected it to be so much worse then it was. My DS didn't notice the shot in his first leg, but when he got the DTap he definitely felt that one. He cried for a little while but was easily soothed with his binky and me rocking him. He fell asleep on the car ride home and for most of the day. He got fussy towards the end of the night but a bottle or just cuddles always fixed it. He never developed a fever until the following night but I have him Tylenol one time and that was it
  • It's harder on mommy than it is on LO! About 20 seconds of crying is all. He slept almost alllll day.
  • Thanks ladies! You're right it's not as bad as you think it will be. He only cried for a bit and was smiling as I put him in his car seat. My dr said only give Tylenol if he seems to be really uncomfortable and not to worry about taking his temp unless again, he seems hot, etc. I'm very glad to have it over but it really wasn't bad at all.
  • Both of my kids forgot about 30 seconds after. I gave one dose of Tylenol but that was it.
  • He did really well with it! Turned super red and cried but was fine as soon as I picked him up. Dr said she doesn't like giving Tylenol this young so warm bath and warm compresses for his legs. If he seems like he really needs something just a tiny amount of Tylenol. He slept most the day and was pretty happy the next day!
  • I took my los band aids off there at the office so that the pain was all over and done with there and I used a bottle to soothe him after and by the time we were in the car he was asleep!
  • I nursed him right after the shots in the exam room and it was like it never happened. He was fine as soon as I picked him up and hugged him :) I waited to take the BandAids off until a few days later ... big mistake! I took them off during a bath so the water helped loosen them, but one was stuck on there good and he let out a little cry when I took it off.

Watching their face when the shots go in is tough, but they recover quickly!
  • I fed her right after and she fell asleep, and slept for a very long time. Also gave her my pinky so suck on while getting them and it helped. Those needles are huge though! I hate shots so it was painful to watch. Of course when I'm uncomfortable or angry I smile and laugh so the nurse probably thought I was a monster.... You can try sugar water, the nurses gave her some while doing shots and blood tests in the hospital and she was so quiet!
  • My guy had his this morning and was such a champ. Cried for maybe 15 seconds and that was it, fell asleep as soon as we got in the car. Just took the band aids off in the bath and he hardly noticed. He's been a little fussy but I just put him on the boob and he was fast asleep 2 minutes later! Being a baby must be so hard ;)
  • My little girl just got her shots this morning and by 3 all hell broke loose. She was crying bloody murder and her leg looked like a tomato. Thankfully I got infant Tylenol right after the check up and gave her some. Put her leg on ice and gave her lots of yummy milk. So far she did not get a fever.
Now she is playing in her jungle gym but if she moves the leg she crys out for a sec. Phew I hope the worst part is over.
  • We go for shots tomorrow, hopefully it goes as smoothly as DD1. I nursed her while she got the shots. Didn't even flinch the first one. The TDaP she popped off and cried, but then I wrapped her up and nursed her again, she was asleep before we left the office and she never had a fever or reaction. I've also been told not to use Tylenol routinely-wait to see if they really need it. So I have some in the house, but I hope not to need it *fingers crossed*. The children's hospital here just finished a study on children's pain and are doing a campaign on how to treat and prevent pain with procedures. For small babies they recommend nursing or skin-to-skin before and during painful procedures. For older babies and children they have a great video summarizing their research: https://pediatric-pain.ca/it-doesnt-have-to-hurt

  • Nursed right after and LO slept for three hours when we got home! But she woke up crying hysterically and turns out she had a temp :( I quickly ran out and bought some Tylenol and that helped her calm down. I monitored her fever over the next 24 hours and it came back again the next day, poor babe. She was a little extra fussy but she got back to her normal self after two days.
