Wow! I wish my birth could be like this

I saw this amazing video https://www.facebook.com/milkfairysgarden/?fref=ts (its the second one on the page after the thing about dads)
Do you think its real? or just super edited?

  • I tend to be hesitant about any claim of easy labor. Our large heads and comparatively narrow pelvis (due to our always upright posture compared to all 4s) make it difficult, its just a tradeoff that we have.

As far as home births, most babies and mothers are fine in home births. That being said, a small percentage of low risk births develop unanticipated complications that midwives in your home simply aren't trained or equipped to handle. A home birthed baby is 4x more likely to die than their hospital birthed counterpart and 17x more likely to sustain brain damage due to lack of oxygen. You may be a 5-10 minute drive from the hospital but that's from door to door while you are okay. Estimates of real time from realization that you need medical intervention until that intervention can be obtained range from 30-45 minutes. You need to get from your house to the car while in late stage labor, drive to the hospital, check in and be evaluated, and THEN they can perform the necessary procedures to save the baby. Try holding your breath through all of that, because that's likely what your baby is doing.

Sorry for the bluntness but home births bug me. They're well intentioned but if you're in that unlucky group, they can be dangerous or even deadly. Not a risk I'm willing to take.
  • As much as I'm NOT doing a home or water birth, I enjoyed the video. As in I'm sitting here weeping lol. Thanks pregnancy hormones! Hah.

  • I won't be having a home birth, it's not my style.  I want to make sure that if need be there is medical intervention available.  That being said, some hospitals and birthing centers off tubs and alternate means of laboring rather than laboring in bed.  Keep in mind this laboring is usually medication free.

  • If a home birth is something you're really interested in, I would recommend watching the video "The Business of being Born" it can be viewed on youtube.

Eh, not me really. Sitting in a pool of my own goo after birth seems really unappealing to me.
At hospitals that offer water birth (and birthing centers, I suppose) the water is exchanged so that you always have fresh water. Not the case at home unless you have one hell of a fancy tub. Maybe this special portable pool does do that? Idk. The water does seem to stay clean so that must be what the tubes are for.  (ETA never mind, it looks pretty dang bloody at the end haha).

I'm not opposed to home birth and I did enjoy watching TBoBB, but I don't really like the villifying of medical staff that is common to a lot of proponents of these kinds of things. Most will do what you want, they just want to make sure that everything's okay and that if you do change your mind on interventions that the option is there. That wasn't always the case but in the last few decades based on evidence L&Ds have really moved away from automatically doing all kinds of interventions, insisting patients do this or that, etc.

My sister considered home birth but had a good point that if something did go wrong, she didn't want to be reminded of it constantly by virtue of living in the place where it happened.

It's a nice video but it kind of makes me think of wedding videos. Inspiring music, throwing in cute moments and skipping the screaming from pain/ yelling at the DJ for picking the wrong song. lol. Birth itself isn't usually the worst part, it's the transition stage.

  • Home births are encouraged in the UK. Women who give birth at home are less likely to need medical intervention and their labour is shorter. Midwives in the UK are well trained medical professionals. They are well equipped to deal with the majority of complications and attend your home with a resuscitation unit. They also know how to spot the early warning signs of trouble and will have you transported to hospital by ambulance. Water births are also very common. If you don't want to birth at home you are encouraged to use a midwife led birth centre. Only high risk or inductions use the delivery suite really and again, they are midwife led. Doctors only get involved if you are very high risk or there is a serious complication.

My labour was less than 2 hours and I only had paracetamol as pain relief. I progressed from 7cm to 10cm in 20 minutes and pushed for 5 minutes. I had no tearing and was up walking around and showered 1.5 hours after the birth. I was home 6 hours later. So as far as ideal births go, mine was just that.

Lucky. I had to be induced, and that went well. However, I pushed for 4 hours to end up in a C/S. My daughter had birth trauma to her head from being stuck and had to go to NICU.
A home birth is fine, as long as their is a medical proffesional there. Like you said, your midwife.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I'll believe those home birth statistics when I see the associated research references.

Generally speaking, home birth is safe; though granted there are some situations in which it isn't. I'm a firm believer in doing what feels right for YOU. I'd be on board with a home birth but I think my husband might perish if I did that lol...So, I'm going to a midwifery group who delivers at one of the best hospitals in the city and I'm planning an unmedicated/minimally intervened birth...which is, as always, subject to change ;)
  • Homebirth can be very safe. Sometimes hospital births involve interventions that cause complications that would never occurred in a homebirth. Personally. I like hospitals because I get a nurse to take care of me while I recover from.the birth and the baby and I learn how to breastfeed.

Easy labors are possible. I was talking through contractions until about 30 minutes before my son was born. The nurse doubted my urge to push was real because I was so calm. I hope this baby follows big brother's example.

  • I personally did actually push for just 8 minutes so it is possible;) ... My labors ranged from 3 to 5 hours & honestly, I pushed as flipping hard as I could & had my babies fast because of it! I didn't watch this video though... But quick & "easy" labors can happen. Labor is my favorite part of pregnancy !! I love it!!
