Needing Advice!!!!

My daughter is 2 months and 3 weeks old. I've heard babies this age are napping anywhere from 45 min to 2 hrs. She only naps maybe 25 or 35 min. I've tried everything to get her more comfortable to sleep longer. Does any other moms have a baby that sleeps like that? I know it's not enough rest cause she's so cranky until she naps again. Also a question. She eats 6oz, and sometimes goes 5 hrs without eating. Is this normal? I'm a ftm and completely clueless

Re: Needing Advice!!!!

  • Cat napping is normal and has to do with circadian rhythms. There are some things you can do to help but some kids are just cat nappers until they go through nap consolidation which can be anywhere from 4 to 6 months. My first took short naps until about 7 months, this one already naps great at 3.5 months. Same methods, different babies. Where does your LO nap? Do you use white noise? Swaddle or sleepsack? Check out preciouslittlesleep.com for some awesome tips on crap naps, you'll find just about everything you need to know there.

As far as going 5 hours, I would think that's a long time to go without eating. Have you tried offering and just seeing if she will eat it? You obviously don't want to overfeed but the more she eats during the day, the less she will need to eat at night. I try to offer a bottle to DS every 2-3 hrs. Some times he eats it all and some times he only eats 2 or 3 ounces.

  • I'll have to check that website out! Thank you so much! Regarding the feeding I've tried offering it to her and she fights me. she'll kick and scream and throw her head
  • If she fights it but is still gaining weight well I wouldn't worry. If she isn't gaining I would check with your pediatrician to see if maybe reflux or lip or tongue tie could be making her not want to eat.
  • Is she going five hours without eating during the day or at night? If it's at night, I would say it falls in the normal range. During the day, I would be concerned because she may be making up those feedings at night. Is she gaining weight normally? Have you talked to your peditirican about your concerns?

  • My boy sleeps from 9pm to 6 am and during the day will go 5 hours sometimes. He's exclusively formula fed and takes six ounces most bottles- and if I try to feed him too soon he just tongues the nipple out of his mouth. Sometimes he's hungry again after 2 hours, but 5 isn't unusual. He's also a champion napper, though, and will take 1-3 hour naps during the day. He's 12 weeks.
