Sneak Peek Gender Kit

Has anyone heard of it? Done it? Know someone who did it? I talked to a pregnant friend over the weekend who did the sneak peek gender kit, and it was right for her. I read some reviews, and they seem mostly positive. Although, the reviews are limited. What are your thoughts?

  • Is this the over-the-counter one? If so, I paid $50 for it with my first pregnancy and it was wrong (said boy and I had a girl). I was pretty devastated because I instinctively knew I was having a girl... or wanted one.  I personally would recommend waiting it out a few more weeks for a more accurate ultrasound.

  • I'd wait for the 20 week anatomy scan or a blood test.
  • If you want it that bad do one of the blood tests that tells you for sure, which would be before the 20 week mark.
  • I say wait for your us. But, I will say we went to a place called Baby's First Images for our anatomy scan at 17 weeks with our first. It was amazing. Huge room, large screen, surround sound. They even had night and weekend appointments. All the techs were ones that were moonlighting from dr offices in the area. We plan on going again with this little nugget, too. Maybe you can look into something like that wherever you are so you don't have to wait quite so long.
  • I tend to think all of those over the counter sex predictor kits have a 50/50 accuracy rate... Even if they do have the 80% accuracy rate they claim, why bother? If you can't really count on the info as truth, what's the point?
  • It's a total waste of money, IMO.  Just wait, you'll find out soon enough.

Not on this BMB to the best of my knowledge. If use the search function under the category ALL can find a ton of information under DNA prenatal tests, Maternit21, Harmony, Verifi

I just left my OB's office and there's a new set of blood tests that can be done at 11-13 weeks (genetic for down syndrome, trisomony 13/18) and it also can detect the sex of the baby. She said almost all insurance covers it now... i'd like to think this would be the best way of knowing gender prior to an ultrasound.

I just spoke to my OB today about these tests, and it was his belief that insurance doesn't cover it unless you're high risk or over 35. BUT I still plan to call my insurance company tomorrow to find out. ;)
  • ^^^ we were just discussing them. Insurance will cover for those that are AMA or high risk from Hx

I'm not trying to be mean but this cannot be factually correct. Here is why:

Gender==//==Sex : gender is not developed until much later on. It is an identity and sex determines how your baby will pee. There is no way that this test can know the gender of your child before it has developed a gender.

In North America, approximately 1% babies are born intersex. Meaning, that they have some degree of characteristics of the opposite sex even if it's a small amount. So the chances of your having a boy/girl/intersex child are 49.5%/49.5%/1%.

The only way for you to find out this early what the sex of your child is is to have one of the specialty tests done such as Harmony or Maternity21...
Thank you for bringing this up @BostonBaby1!
So many people don't know proper terminology and it's important to spread awareness.
I'd also just like to point out that these tests' main purpose is to find genetic abnormalities in the baby and not to be used to find out what color to paint the nursery.
Is it an added bonus? Of course!
However if you weren't planning on these forms of testing please don't use it to find out the sex of your baby as it takes up time, resources and raises costs.
I'd also like to make sure it is understood that I'm not implying any of you would do it but just want to put it out there for anyone who may have the idea to abuse the reasons for theses tests.

Thank you for bringing up such an important point! It's very similar to the anatomy scan in the sense that the a/s is actually to find out whether or not the anatomy of one's baby is healthy, go figure ;-) Most times, one is able to find out the sex of their child at that scan… But there will be a few people that won't be able to ( uncooperative positioning) and that's just fine. They will get a surprise! We plan to be team green even though we will get this early testing done. It's going to be wonderful to have the surprise! So long as baby is healthy that is all that matters.
  • I had the Maternity 21 with my 2nd pregnancy. Since I do not have any sex link related diseases in my family, they did not do that part of the test. Therefore, I had to wait just like every one else.

    But that was ok.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I'm okay with fun guessing of gender: ramzi, Chinese calendar, ring over belly.. that kind of stuff, but I wouldn't spend money on a guess.

Great points! $100 is a lot of money for something that I wouldn't fully believe anyway. @bostonbaby1 you brought up some things that didn't even cross my mind. I think I'll save the $100, and wait.

Nope. Not necessarily. I'm 38 and my insurance didn't cover it. That's a $3500 test and I have no idea how much I'm on the hook for.

  • To be honest i was about 20 weeks with my son when i found out but my daughter i found out at 16 weeks also had her a week early. So you do want to wait to make sure you dont waste your money
  • I'm on the "wait it out" train. The days drag on and it will feel like you will be chasing the scan, but it is so worth the wait.

I'm also saying this, because I have bills, my masters to pay off, and a four year old that keeps me on my toes.

We are in this together, y'all.

That's insane!!! You should first call up and dispute the lack of coverage. BCBS is a great company and it's very strange. Second thing to do is to call the manufacturer and ask for a discounted OOP price. Explain your situation. Wow. That sucks.

The doctor's office said it might happen. They said if it did, we wouldn't have to pay the whole thing.

I wanna do it, probably won't do the sneak peek one. The ultrasound place I go to offers it through a genetics company, so probably will go that route so I don't have to collect my own blood.
  • If your insurance doesn't cover the harmony (etc) test they provide you with a discounted rate. The lab will tell you the cost before hand and it ranges from 150-350 I believe (depending on which test you get). You will often get a bill for a few thousand dollars and then later they send you the ammended bill. You get the first bill because they do submit to the insurance company so it's sent by default but if you call they'll tell you to ignore it. The test is 99% accurate but you can get a result for XX (girl) when it's XY (boy). It happens if they don't find a Y but this is very uncommon. You can't get a false XY. If they get so little DNA they aren't finding a Y they usually retest free anyway and don't give you the initial partial results
