Need some reassurance I'm not crazy

I am 5+2 today. I had beta testing last week. Numbers doubled as expected. Then I made the stupid choice of taking another hpt. I wanted to see the line darker then the control. It was lighter. All weekend it was lighter. No bleeding or cramping. No real symptoms other then sore Bbs sometimes. I'm convinced that I've lost this pregnancy too. I have a appointment 12/10. I'm going to be a mess until then.

Re: Need some reassurance I'm not crazy

  • What I have heard, is that when the concentration of HCG is too high (as happens in the period of time that you're in), there is a parabola effect or something and the line actually gets lighter. Remember, HPT only check the PRESENCE of HCG in your urine, not the amount. If you are really concerned, you can get one of those clearblue digital weeks estimators, but regular pregnancy tests shouldn't really be used to check for progression of pregnancy.

  • Please don't stress. Pregnancy tests get lighter with higher hcg levels. In fact some woman pregnant with twins don't get a +test until a blood test is done because of the high levels.

  • Just wanted to add that it's called the Hook effect and is very common.

  • You're not crazy, you're pregnant :)
  • @emnoahmom---are you a lab person?!?

I was coming in here to say the exact same thing!

I am not a lab person, however I should be a professional researcher! I actually just learned that after getting two negatives and a faint positive a week later when I was sure I was pregnant and looking up the how's and why's for hours.

Ha!  Come join the dark side down in the lab!!

I use this example pretty frequently to quiz my students on the Hook effect---they love to ask us this on our boards.

  • Have you called your doctor? I had a minor freak out this morning (my appointment wasn't until 12/8) and my doctor fit me in for an ultrasound within 2 hours. I feel much better now that I have seen the baby and heard the heartbeat!
