Low sitting placenta

Friday morning I noticed a little blood and called the doctor.  At first her nurse called me back and said to just watch it for changes- increase in amount of blood, cramps, change of blood color, ect.  But less than an hour later she called me back and told me the doctor wanted me to go in for another ultrasound to check for viability.  I was able to schedule an appointment for yesterday morning and was relieved to see the baby's heartbeat still going strong.  The doctor on call yesterday told me that my placenta is sitting low and rubbing against my cervix which can cause some light spotting.  Overall he said it wasn't a concern as most of the time the placenta moves into the correct position when the uterus moved into the abdominal cavity in the second trimester.  I know I should be relieved- but I'm still just worried about this extra complication. I'm in my 8th week now- which is when we lost our last pregnancy- so the timing is adding to my stress.  Have any of you also been told your placenta is low?  Any success stories or advice for remaining calm for the next 4 weeks until our next scan would be great!

Re: Low sitting placenta

  • I don't have any advice but I really hope everything moves forward okay.  Maybe make sure you are resting more frequently to try to avoid the irritation by your cervix?

  • I did last time and this one. It usually moves up in the second trimester. I had occasional spotting through week 14. This time I have had some but not much. It's really nothing to worry about.
  • Yes, mine was very low early on with my last pregnancy. As I grew bigger, it moved up, and was normal by my 20 week scan. Good luck with your follow ups!

  • Yup this happened to me my last pregnancy. Was flagged as low-lying at my 19-week ultrasound and had to go for another one at 34 weeks. Had moved up at this point. It's more common (and more likely to resolve itself) if you have an anterior placenta.
  • If it DOESN'T resolve itself, it most likely just means a c-section. Which isn't the best news, but it's better than the old days where it was a disaster.
  • @LilLynch2015 its normal to worry, but try not to give it too much concern yet. :) I actually was just reading in What To Expect and it echoed your dr--it said that all placentas move during pregnancy. (I'd never known they moved around down there! I thought they were stuck to the side or something, lol.) It further said that the vast majority of ones that start low move up by later in the pregnancy. Something to watch, but likely to resolve as your dr said. :) glad everything turned out ok with your scan and fx it's a non-issue at your next one!
  • Thanks everyone!  It's so hard not to worry- but it's good to hear from others that have had a similar experience that all resolved naturally.  I'm going to try to not stress about every little thing (really miss wine).  Hopefully the holidays will be a distraction for the next 3 weeks until my NT scan.

  • Yes, with DD I had a lower place which moved up later on in pregnancy. This is actually pretty normal according to my SIL whose an ultrasound tech.
  • I had one and it moved by 20 weeks. I had bleeding up until it moved

  • I was worried about the same thing! I was told mine was low at 10 weeks after having some bleeding. My dr said it'll probably move up and gave me progesterone which stopped the bleeding.
