Coffee and a 3 year old

Good morning Moms,
I am a mother of a 3.5 year old, had 2 early miscarriages before him, and here I am freshly pregnant and exhausted. When I was pregnant with my son I stayed far away from anything and everything that could have been reason for a problem. But this time around I am having an extremely difficult time dropping the early morning pick-me-up of coffee. I have limited myself to one modest cup a day, and raspberry tea at night. Many girlfriends of mine drank coffee, soda, tea continuously through pregnancy. Does anyone know of any actual studies that prove caffeine is a strict no-no? I'm just concerned that I won't be able to keep up with the boy, or work, or my daily upkeep.
Thank you,
Sleeping too much to keep up.

I believe the consensus here is that up to 200mg (caffeine) per day is okay which would make your one cup within the "legal limit". If you're really concerned call the doctors office- they probably get this question a lot and staff could answer for you.

  • My DR said it was ok to have a cup a day - I sometimes have 2 depending on my mood/exhaustion.

I also opt for Orange/Apple juice and ginger ale. I feel that's a pretty good compromise..I'll have a Sprite or something similar once in a while..I think the key is everything in moderation.
  • 200 mg.

Have a cup of coffee. Or 2 shots of espresso. You can google the studies, or go by what your doctor says (recommended).
  • 200 mg is ok. That amount adds up differently depending on if you make coffee at home or go to different cafes. McDonald's is much less than Starbucks for instance. You can google a lot of that info.

I've been having about 24 oz of half caff per day and consider that ok because I make it at home. I try to drink decaf when I'm out since the amounts vary so much between places.

  • The book Expecting Better researched and compiled a bunch of studies about things like this. Supposedly there's no terrible link until you're shot gunning 8 cups a day, but the official recommendation is 200 mg. I can have two venti Starbucks for that. That book was great, it really calmed me and DH down and it was a fast read.
  • I do believe in all things in moderation, and so much more this time around the pregnancy bush. Thanks for the helpful nods. It helps just being able to ask simple "duh" questions when we are keeping things quiet on the announcement front.
  • I usually have a coffee aversion for a good bit of pregnancy but when I dont have an aversion I have my usual cup in the morning. Some days may be two cups, or one large Starbucks. I don't avoid much of anything during pregnancy. I don't drink, so that's not exactly something I feel in avoiding. But I go about life as I normally would.
