Belly button bulge

My LO all of a sudden has a pea size bump on her belly button, it gets bigger when she cries but it's always there now. I called her doc to see what to do but just left a message. What is this?

Re: Belly button bulge

  • It's an umbilical hernia.  Nothing to worry about and will resolve itself.  One of my twins had the same thing until about 10 weeks.

  • Mine has an umbilical hernia but it's not bright red like yours. It's just a bump that's flesh colored and soft. It gets bigger when he's bearing down or fussing. But can be touched softly and it's suddenly flat to his tummy. Not sure about the bright red spot in the pic.
  • My son has a hernia there too but like PP it's not red but bulges out when he cries - it's also much larger. The ped said they can sometimes take up to a year or two to fully resolve.
  • My daughter has it too. It's not always noticeable though and it's not bright red it's more a dull colour but i never thought anything of it til reading this x
  • It might not be a hernia! It could be an umbilical granuloma. My son had one, originals told it was a hernia but after a second opinion after I wasn't sure that it was it was confirmed to be the granuloma. Sometimes need surgery depending on particular situations but my sons shrunk and disappeared on its own!
  • My SIL's baby had something like this and it was a serious infection. I would call the ped just to be safe.
  • @mel0601 that's exactly what they said but we still have to go to a specialist because she is older then the normal granuloma.
  • I'm glad you have an answer! We were booked in to see a specialist but the wait was so long and it whent away lol
    Good luck!!
  • It looks just like an umbilical hernia and the fact that you said it rises when she cries is exactly what a hernia does. Was it there when she was born? I ask because I don't think this would suddenly occur and I'm sure a doctor would have mentioned it at the hosptial. If it's something new, I would definitely take LO to the doctor. It could be something else like people mentioned above.
