Severe arm pain after dtap vaccine

Did anyone else experience this? It was so bad I couldn't move my arm for 3 days and contemplated going to the emergency room. I searched arm pain and the vaccine popped up. I thought the baby was sitting on a nerve. Thank goodness it's going away now.

Re: Severe arm pain after dtap vaccine

  • Mine was pretty sore and I got a terrible bruise. Wonder if it's the vaccine or who administers it.

  • My arm was fine after TDAP. The flu shot, on the other hand, had me sore for days. Same person administered both.
  • Mine hurt pretty badly for about three days too. I could barely use my arm the first day. It might just be the nature of the vaccine.

  • Mine radiated. It was so painful from my shoulder to my wrist. I read that the pain is a severe reaction. It's fading now so now I dont know what to say when the doc calls back.

  • My arm was super sore for a few days also! Not to mention the swelling, fever, nausea/loss of appetite, and fatigue that I got. According to my OB, these are all "normal" reactions for that particular vaccine. I usually have a worse reaction than most people though.
  • My arm felt like someone punched me for a few days afterwards. It was totally fine when I got the flu shot in the same place 7 days later.
  • Yup! I got my flu and tdap on the same day.... One in each arm! I could barely lift my arms for a couple days. I think you'll be fine.
  • Yeah, I felt like I was punched and it hurt to sleep on. When the girl gave me the shot I said "oh that was nothing!" and then she said "yeah, well you'll be cursing me tomorrow". She was right, and I think it's completely normal. It felt better in a few days.

  • Yup! Flu shot was fine but the Tdap hurt pretty bad for at least a week. My arm was noticeably weaker and the injection site developed a hot to the touch red circular rash. Not fun!
  • I was definitely in pain for a few days. I also ended up with a pretty bad bruise that lasted about a week.

  • I couldn't lift my arm for like 4-5 days. But the nurse gave mine right at my shoulder joint
  • My nurse purposely shot me in my right arm (since I am right handed) first thing in the morning, and told me to be active with that arm for the day. I wasn't sore at all.

I wasn't aware of this technique with the flu shot I got a couple weeks prior, and went home and slept. My arm was sore for days!

Same here. Went away in a few days.
  • Hmm I wasn't sore at all with either TDAP or flu shot. That would have freaked me out-- glad it went away! I'll have to remember this possibility since my husband is getting his soon!
  • Yup I was sore that long too, not immobile though. I felt proud like it was my first mom thing or something. Made me feel less nervous for the epidural too.
  • Totally! Got flu and TDAP on Monday and one week later it STILL hurts to sleep on that side...
  • Tdap is somewhat known as a pretty painful vaccine, but everyone reacts differently. I was terrified to get mine before starting my job because of what I'd been told but it wasn't as painful as I thought it would be. Again, it just depends on the person, we all react differently. My mom had hers recently and said she couldn't lift her arm for several days but it resolved not long after.

  • Yes the vaccine settles in the muscle, it's actually better to move the arm a lot afterwards, helps disperse it and make the soreness go away quicker.
  • Yep my tdap injection site hurt for a few days. Makes me understand why my kids are fussy after there vaccines.

  • I was prepared for it to hurt. I had the Tdap and the flu shot in separate arms at the same time. They gave me a sheet before with info about it and warned me before administering it that it is normal for the Tdap to hurt for a few days. Although the flu shot was more of a pain for me.

I've had the TDAP leave me pretty sore for about a week and I could still feel the injection site if I stretched my arms certain ways for a month or two. The tetanus part is painful, it helps shots hurt less if you focus on relaxing your muscle prior to the shots versus tightening your muscle in anticipation. This time the TDAP didn't hurt. I had 2 shots in 1 arm (not while pregnant) and developed a localized fever in the arm which was weird I was told to take tylenol by my doctor because they didn't like the localized fever reaction but it was more weird than painful.
