April 2016 Moms

Carrying high vs low

I know the old wives tale of low and narrow means boy, high and wide means girl, but I've never been good at figuring out if I am actually carrying high vs low! I'm pretty sure I have a short torso on top of being only 5'4", so I always feel like it's impossible to really tell on me. Anyone else wondering if they are high/low? I would love to see some examples of high or low bumps from you amazing April mommas!

This was from the Wednesday. Little over 18 weeks in this picture. I feel like I'm so much bigger this time around, but I'm starting 15 lbs smaller than my first pregnancy.

Re: Carrying high vs low

  • Just search up the thread HDBD. Every Wednesday we show off our bumps, you'll be able to see the mamas who carry high or low :)

But to answer your question, I have no idea how I carry. I just know I look short as hell with my bump haha
  • Loading the player...
  • I carried very very low with my first. She's a girl and went 10 days past her due date. All old wives tales shattered. I think the way you carry has more to do with the mother's anatomy than sex of the baby. I am very narrow with a long torso, so my uterus is low in comparison to someone with a shorter torso.
  • I carried high with DD1, this DD2 is carrying low (keep having to push my pants down further than I think at the doctor for Doppler) but look high because my organs are pushed up and out. Different for both, both girls.

  • Carrying high or low is dependent on the strength of your abdominal muscles pre-pregnancy, and not at all indicative of the sex of the child you're carrying.

    I love science.

Is that your way of telling me I'm out of shape ;););)

  • Everyone says I'm carrying high, which holds up to the tales, since I'm having a girl, but I honestly don't know how to see it!
  • The old wives tale isn't true. I've carried low with all my pregnancies and 2 have been boys and this one is a girl.

Not in the slightest, just what a study I read says. My torso is so short that I don't think I can carry high or low, so I think this means that my baby is a boy who will later identify as a female platypus.
I kid, I kid. But hint: I cannot master the lower ab workout. So, low babies it is.

As long as you're not having a velociraptor, you're fine.

Can you imagine the crawling faze? My floors would be all scratched to hell if it were a velociraptor. But maybe someone would finally show my asshole cats who is boss!
Or breastfeeding when they get all handsy? Ouch.
  • I really want to tease people with all of the old wives tales before we find out the sex of the baby. This is the only thing that I can't figure out. XD

It really changes from Day to day! My baby usually sits low, but yesterday he was quite high (I know because I didn't have urges to pee, and I found him with my Doppler right at my belly button).
Today he is back low again - urges to pee have returned, and I found him much lower with doppler.
    They move around!

@thaisac1 I think mine is only low-riding when he/she wants to be an asshole, because my bladder makes a great trampoline and lightening crotch is funny! My condolences if Luca (can I call him that yet? I love the name!) makes this his regular deal.

Yeah we call him Luca already and so can you! :) Little Luca loves to sit on my bladder, which makes for some interesting rushing to the bathroom moments, when clothes are flying and all...

In many Asian countries mothers and grandmothers will instantly know the sex by looking at the bump. Girl bumps stay in the front and rise from the bottom up - you don't see the tummy when you look at the mom from behind.
On the other hand Boy bumps are visible and round sideways (like the mom has a tire around her belly) so she looks obviously pregnant even from behind.
I definitely don't look preggo from behind and I am having a girl

This totally varies person to person - one of my sisters has carried each of her five children different ways and has a mixture. Another has four, and was wide with two, front with two. All four are girls.

Then I guess it's like any other thing - case by case per person & baby!

Yeah. It has literally nothing to do with the sex of the baby. My mom had two girls. With me she gained a tiny bump and that's it. With my sister she had a larger bump and ballooned everywhere. Arms face etc. I seriously don't get how people assign such random things to an entire sex. I was super constipated and my friend kept asking me if I was sure I wasn't having a girl because she had the exact same symptom when she was pregant with her girl. Uhhhhhh no.

  • I am definitely carrying low. The ultrasound tech confirmed my suspicion on that... Oh, and the fact that I get fatigue in my lower abdominal muscles by the end of the day, religiously, was kind of a dead give away to me.

I don't look "prego" at all and I'm having a boy. No bump ftw!
(But guys how will I know the sex?)

  • My baby is all over the place; he clearly hasn't settled into a "low" or "high" yet! That being said, wouldn't a low or high carry become more obvious later on?
Also, I'm having a boy, and you can't tell from behind at all. My belly is like a ball under my shirt.
  • With DD1 and now DD2 I don't look pregnant from behind or really from the front if I'm wearing a cardigan. From the side my bump is super apparent. More than once have I wanted to scream at people that just because my ass isn't huge does not mean I'm having a boy

I've had a big ol booty even before I got pregnant. Does that mean I'm destined to forever have boys...?

My Asian parents and grandparents and aunties are all swearing up and down what I'm having based off this wives tale. I'm interested to find out what I'm having already!

I got a good BFM. Why is it so hard for whoever uses the staff bathroom back here to CHECK if they are leaving pubes on the seat before they leave??? FFS that's like the second time I've seen it when I went in there. I can't wait for my lunch breaks or to go home anymore since my bladder's starting to be squished.  >:(

I'm losing it today. Since when did I have this thread clicked? LOL

  • Since I've inadvertently clicked this post I'll play. OP mentioned "high and wide." I went in for my anatomy scan this morning and baby was up high and transverse so they said I'd look wider for now. They had to look for the baby's head up near my belly button. I'm having a boy.

  • I'm carrying low and all in my tummy. Also I'm still under 20 weeks so my uterus is probably low. LO is definitely a girl. I am carrying my baby all in my gut, which is how my body typically is when it fluctuates to heavier than usual. Nothing too new.
