EBF but not producing nearly enough..

I'm EBF and pumping. I nurse on one side and then pump on the other after every feeding and I only get 2 oz. At most. So discouraging.. I already drink my weight in water... I'm just at a loss.

Re: EBF but not producing nearly enough..

  • How much do you think you should be pumping? If you nurse on one side, LO may be getting more than you are pumping on the other side. I am almost exclusively pumping and I always get more from one than the other. Also, LO might only be eating 2oz. If she is nursing 10x a day, 2oz is appropriate.

  • My LO went tHrough a growth spurt this week and I thought I wasn't producing enough. I was lucky to get an oz from either side while pumping. Babies are much more efficient than a pump and is probably getting more than the 2oz you think (s)he is. I also read that while staying hydrated is very important it doesn't up your supply (being dehydrated will deplete your supply though). As long as baby has enough wet/ dirty diapers and is gaining weight you don't have anything to worry about.

  • Her pediatrician said she should be eating about 3-4 oz per feeding. Based on that is why I think I should be able to pump more... I m trying to build up a supply and I'm having no such luck..
  • How much you are able to pump isn't a clear indicator of how much you are producing and how much she is eating. Babies are better at getting milk than the pump. So even though you pump 2oz, she may be eating 3-4. Also, FWIW, I pump and bottle feed my boy, and he rarely eats more than 2oz at a time. He eats 9-11 times per day. He is 4 weeks old day, and has almost gained 2 pounds. His weight gain is good, he pees and he poos, so the doctor isn't worried.

If you want to increase your supply, try eating old fashioned oats every morning for breakfast, drink a glass of cranberry juice each morning, and take 2 tablets of Fenugreek 3x a day. This is what I started doing, and in 3 days, my supply nearly doubled (since I am pumping, I can tell!)
  • That is a good amount to pump post feeding. I wouldn't stress unless LO is giving some indication she isn't getting enough.

  • I'll try all the tips to increase my supply. Maybe she is just hitting her three week growth spurt.. and eating more..
  • Try adding alfalfa supplements.

  • If you get 2 oz on one side , LO is probably eating 2 oz on the other side. Which means your getting 4 oz .. That's pretty good .
  • I'm no expert but when I pump I rarely get more than 3 oz even eheb lo hasn't touched that breast ( we block feed ). I think I haven't fully figured out the tricks to pumping. Today I pumped and got 2 oz. lo hadn't touched that breast since last night. So 2 oz might be ok :) and I'm sure your baby is more efficient at getting milk out too. Don't despair!

Want to add that ds had his 4 week app on Friday. He gained 1 lb 7 oz since his 2 week app. As long as lo is gaining weight and is having the appropriate number of diapers you are good!!

  • Have you tried drinking nursing tea to increase your supply? How often do you feed the little one?
  • MOST babies are more efficient than pumping. Not all; mine included. Visit a lactation consultant to get tips. They'll weigh the baby before and after a feeding to tell you exactly how much he is getting so you know if you need to supplement with formula and how much. Wet diapers are not 100% guarantee baby is getting enough to eat. Knowing this might have saved us a trip to the ER and 4 days in the ICU. Good luck! I'm in the same boat of trying to increase supply.
