Sick during pregnancy!

So as if first trimester pregnancy wasn't bad enough, I've got the flu! Has anyone else been sick so far? If so let me know what you did and any medications you took? How to make this more bearable? I've been taking benedryl but I find that I'm just sleeping which is nice but now I'm not eating or drinking cause I have no energy.

(A little back story I did go to my doctor about this cause it got so bad, I'm just wondering if there were certain things that made this flu/pregnancy journey a little less horrible for you bumpies.)

Oh and feel free to vent being sick and pregnant sucks!!!

Re: Sick during pregnancy!

  • Robitussin and tylenol can help ease flu symptoms. Ask your doctor for an approved medicine list for pregnancy. Ive been sick for the past 2 months and im just starting to feel better now.

  • I didn't have the flu but I did have a 7-day head cold with fatigue, awful congestion and runny nose. No cough or fever. For the most part I just bought a lot of Kleenex and complained about it to anyone who would listen. I tried saline spray a few times but the taste/smell of it really bothered me. Hope you feel better soon. Hand hygeine is even more important when pregnant!!

  • Can we use antibacterial gel while pregnant ? I work with clients in the community and used it a lot before but haven't since.

  • I have an ear infection. Last pregnancy I was sick with something in the beginning also. I forget what I took then. Benedryl isn't going to do anything but put you to sleep, which at least passed the time.

  • Which flu do you have?

Also, the issue with Influenza and pregnancy is dehydration and high fevers. What did your Dr tell you to take when the Flu test came back positive?
    Thank God for Raid.

This. I would imagine that after you got swabbed your doctor gave you instructions? Feel better mama!

After the swab came back positive the doctor gave me some strong tylenol basically to fill and told me to go home and Take benadryl if I couldn't sleep or was nauseous. He said it was more of a 24 hour flu thing but will last longer as I'm pregnant. Just to basically suck it up and keep an eye on my fever.
And ya I totally called my sister and complained cause she would listen!

I'm so perenoid I don't want to miscarry this baby or cause any birth defects.
    Thanks for all the replies!
    Feel better sick mommas!

I completely understand where you're coming from. Hopefully if it's only going to be a 24 hour thing, you'll be able to start feeling better by tomorrow. If not, you can always call your doctor back and I'm sure that there are other options that would not cause birth defects. For example, my doctor allows cough drops so long as there is no medicated center. Other things like hard candies might be acceptable. Some doctors will allow Robitussin, some will allow Sudafed. It depends on the situation and the doctor. I hope you feel better soon mama!
  • Don't have the flu, but definitely sick! Work DD I was sick probably a good two months into it...

I haven't been taking anything, just carry tissues everywhere! Doesn't help that DD just started a new day care so now she's sick too with all the new kid germs and use prob going to pass that to me too...ugh! It's never ending!

Hope you ladies feel better soon!
  • @Lindsayleigh1989 - Yes, you can use antibacterial hand gel while pregnant. I am a nurse and use it all day long. You want to make sure you're using one with alcohol. There are some other ingredients that aren't great but most are alcohol-based.

  • Make sure you are taking tylenol to keep your fever down. It can harm baby if your core temperature is elevated. Also, as much as you don't want to... make sure you are getting liquids in...gatorade to replace electrolytes. It may suck, but landing in the hospital for IV fluids sucks way worse.
