Sudden braking

Hi everyone,

So I am 10wk4d, and I was traveling this past week for work. A co-worker of mine slammed on the brakes. I would say they were going 30-45 mph at the time. I jerked a little, but didnt hit off the dashboard or anything to that degree. I was wearing a seatbelt. I am guessing lower abdomen. I called my OB the next day and explained what was going on. I have no bleeding, leaking fluids, or cramping. I had mild stomach pain, but that has been going on even before the car incident. OB said its probably just sore muscle, and only call if I get cramping or bleeding.

I guess I am wondering if anybody else or someone you know has experienced something like this? After that, I bought the bump belt. I realize I worry too much :/
My first appointment is this tuesday the 24th.

Re: Sudden braking

  • Definitely sounds like you are fine. Baby is well-protected in there. Make a habit of making sure your seatbelt is always across your hips and not your abdomen from now on :)

  • Oh no, how scary for you, I'm sorry you experienced that. We all worry. Your dr said you are fine and I would think so too based on your description. The baby is still very protected by the pelvis at 10wks. Be sure to call the dr back if anything changes. :)

the bump belt sounds like a good idea, I'm going to look into it.
  • Thank you ladies. @HBMama2B @Emztron500 I guess I just need that reassurance. I know there are many of pregnant women out there who get blows to the abdomen, and are fine bc baby is well cushioned. I'm a FTM and this anxiety has the best of me...
  • I went through something similar when I was pregnant with my second. I was in a car accident that totalled my car, but being only 9 wks along, she was totally fine. The worst part for me was not being able to take anything for the pain (whiplash/hit my head on side window) since I was pg. But I, like you was worried until the Dr reassured me.

  • I slipped on ice on the sidewalk when I was expecting my first and it scared me to death, so I can relate to the fear. It really sounds fine though, I would try not to worry. LO is still so low and covered up, and you would almost certainly have symptoms if something was off.

    Good luck at your appointment!

  • I was in a car accident when I was 28 weeks with my second. I went to the hospital for monitoring and an ultrasound and everything was fine. It is really scary but if your doctor isn't concerned then you shouldn't be either.

  • I also was in a car accident with my last pregnancy- I was 16 weeks at the time and the OR doctors were very reassuring that even at that stage the baby is well protected. No worries, mama!
  • Oh I know the fear...last month my in laws came into town and we were going out to dinner. My father in law was driving and hit the brakes very hard.  I was only 6 weeks at the time and I was definitely furious, but everything was okay.  The baby is very protected at this time, and if your doctor says it's okay, I would try not to stress too much.

  • I'm very sure your baby is fine!

Just to make you feel better, I was hit by another driver TWO times during one pregnancy, and once (that actually totaled the car) during another pregnancy! Also I bumped my stomach so hard against a metal fence rod, that I had a black and blue mark during one of my pregnancies. I even hit my stomach so hard against a piece of furniture during another pregnancy, that it gave me a bruise big enough for my OB to scold me about being more careful.

Despite beating myself up (literally,)  the babies were well protected in there.
  • I was in a car accident at 9 weeks with my first. Husband hit a deer at 55mph and I was reclined but it jerked me straight up. I was fine and he was fine. Lots and lots of cushion present at this stage!
  • My 75 lb dog jumped on the couch (I.e. On my belly under a blanket) with my first when I was early on. --- not the same situation but still- there was force on the belly involved. Anyway he is absolutely perfect and just turned 3. ;)
  • thank you all for the peace of mind. I take it this is only the beginning of worries in motherhood? I need better ways to cope so I'm not a nervous wreck.
