Insomnia

I'm 8 weeks and can't sleep!
I'm tired all the time. Some nights I have a hard time falling asleep, but most nights I have a hard time staying asleep. I tend to wake up at 3AM every morning and can't fall back to sleep until around 7Am. This isn't causing any huge problems right now because I am not currently working, but I am a Nurse and in the next 2 weeks I'll be starting a job that requires me to get up early and go work a 13 hour shift, 3 days a week.
Does anyone have any advice on ways to get a full nights sleep, without the nightly 3AM wakeup?

  • I don't have any advice but I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone! Without fail I've been waking up between 2 and 3 and can't get back to sleep either! It's exhausting!

  • Pre-pregnancy I also had the 3-4am wake-ups and couldn't go back to sleep for hours (or at all). Surprisingly I'd been sleeping through the night since being pregnant. Until tonight. Ugh. The one thing that sometimes would help me is a sleep machine (will probably come in handy for baby later too). Sorry I have no solutions though, just sympathy....

  • I also wake up multiple times a night. I was having a hard time falling back to sleep, until I realized that my husbands breathing is so loud that it makes it impossible to fall back asleep. I started wearing earplugs and it's perfect. This happened with my first pregnancy too. His breathing never bothered me before, and the minute she was born it stopped bothering me. Pregnancy is so weird.
  • I started using food grade lavender oil in a veggie cap (with some avocado oil mixed in so its not too strong) and a cup of tea before bed about a week ago and it seems to help get me to sleep quicker and keep me asleep through the night.
  • @sailorchels what kind of tea do you drink? I've head not to drink any herbal tea when pregnant and green and black both have caffeine.

This is totally me! Before pregnancy, I used to take a Zyrtec for allergies or an Advil Pm to sleep through the night. Now I'm asleep by 10 and awake between 3-5. Sometimes I can snooze, sometimes I can't. Part of my issue is that I breath through my mouth at night because my nasal passages are stuffed. I wake up with a dry mouth most nights. Ugh.
  • I feel your pain :( I've found that reading a book when I wake up helps me fall asleep faster than just laying there. Sometimes I'll also shower which helps for me, but might have the reverse effect on others.

  • I got a memory foam topper for my bed and now I sleep much better. Assess the comfort of your bed, even if it doesn't feel like that's the issue.
  • This was me for a solid month. What finally helped me was a combination of things every day- napping for only half an hour max, going outside for awhile, and doing a little workout. I also eat before bed so I don't wake up hungry, but stop drinking water like an hour before bed so I don't have to pee. I'm exhausted by the time I go to bed around 10, but I sleep straight through until DD wakes me up at 7! Good luck!
  • also- not sure if you've heard this but you supposedly shouldn't look at screens 1 hr leading up to bedtime. It tells the mind it's daytime... Or something like that. Anyway- it's worth a try- but I am contributing to your anti sleep problem by giving you advice and making you look at a screen.
  • Not sure how you feel about meds but unisom is a pregnancy safe sleep aid.
  • My doctor also recommended unisom if needed but I haven't used it yet. Also, Zyrtec is totally fine during pregnancy, @chloe97 I don't know if that's why you stopped but if it is you should talk to your doc and start again! Good luck!

I don't sleep through the night, I get up 2-3 times to pee, but at least I'll back asleep pretty quick after.
