1st Trimester High Risk Scan

Anyone have their 1st trip scan w/perinatologist yet? I just made my appointment & wondering what to expect? Is this where they can also determine sex of baby? How did your test go? Just a bit nervous, even though I'm sure there is nothing to worry about!

Re: 1st Trimester High Risk Scan

  • We've had a free threads on this topic. NT scan, harmony test, there are different names and different versions of what happens.

I have an appointment with MFM next week. It's just blood work and HD u/s. Nothing to worry about.

  • Just wanted to chime in and say that we had our NT scan yesterday.  We were not deemed high risk, my OB didn't even recommend it, but due to a chromosomal abnormality in my niece and the fact that this scan is covered by our insurance, we decided to pursue it. I was 12w1d when I had it based on LMP.

We had a 20 minute ultrasound and it was so great to spend that much time with baby.  Fortunately we had a wonderful tech who talked us through everything she was doing.  She took measurements of baby (2.1 inches) and my uterus, measured the nuchal fold in three separate images (which came back 1.6mm, normal) and also showed us baby's organs, bone structure and brain.  She showed us the umbilical cord and also showed me where my placenta was.  She said at the anatomy scan they would check to see if the placenta was covering the cervix.  We saw and heard the heartbeat which came in at 159 bpm and she also did a scan on my ovaries.  She was able to tell me that I ovulated from my left side with this baby so that was cool to know.  She gave us 11 pictures of baby, 2 of which were 3D images.  We saw arms, legs, feet and were even able to count five fingers in one image.  We got a few views in between the legs but obviously nothing definitive enough to determine the sex at this point.  From there, she left and about 10 minutes later the doctor came in and told us everything looked great.  He said that the ultrasound is not a good indicator to detect the chromosomal abnormalities unless it is combined with 2 rounds of blood work and we said we wanted to proceed with the blood work.  He said baby was actually measuring 3 days ahead, putting me at 12w4d but we are keeping my original due date as it's close enough.  With that, we scheduled our 20 week anatomy scan and I went for my first round of blood work (4 vials).  I go back for another blood draw in four weeks.

Overall it was a great experience and I would do it again mostly because it was nice to spend that much time with baby.  We got some amazing pictures and I can't wait to see the growth when we're back for our 20 week scan.

Sure! I haven't ever taken my husband to an ultrasound, but that would make the experience even better.
  • Just as a warning - some ultrasound places will not allow partners in the room. With my first pregnancy, he wasn't allowed in for any of my ultrasounds with the exception of the anatomy scan at 20 weeks - and even then, they kept him out until after they were done taking the measurements. Also, I think some places are super careful about saying anything (as most aren't technically qualified to analyze the images). Most of my ultrasounds were me anxiously waiting for them to say anything while they quietly did their work. I wish they'd have started out by just saying "I see a heartbeat" or something else to let me know the baby hadn't died. 5 ultrasounds total and only one was pleasant!
  • For gods sake yes, bring your husband!!! Our first pregnancy revealed a an unexpected, but in their opinion, likely chromosomal abnormality in that scan(which was unfortunately the case in the end), but had my husband not been there??? I can't even begin to imagine. It was crucial to my survival.

Not wanting to scare you- our situation is rare, and I wish you all the best. Good luck!
