Poo Obsessed

Are any other ebf moms obsessed with poo color and frequency? My ebf son has now gone from yellow to green to brown. At almost 5 weeks he has been going less too. My ped is tired of hearing from me on the subject but it's causing me a ton of anxiety. There are times where I am wondering whether there's something wrong with my milk...I've cut out dairy and gluten and nuts and it seems to all be getting worse!

This is the part of bf that is not enjoyable. Add to this his occasional meltdowns at the breast and I just want to quit :(

Re: Poo Obsessed

  • Yes! My husband thinks I'm crazy b/c I examine every one. DD his 8 weeks and her frequency started dropping around the 5 week mark. She used to go after every feeding, dropped down to once per day and now usually goes twice.

I try not to obsess over color. My pedi said unless it's white, black or red we are doing fine so I'm trying to trust that. Staying off google has helped me with the that!

  • From everything I have read and heard from the pediatricians, it is not unusual for breastfed babies to go days without pooping. They digest the breastmilk really efficiently. The meltdowns at your breast aren't unusual either. My daughter gets frantic at mine sometimes too. If we are home I strip us both down and get some good skin to skin contact. I hold her to the center of my chest to calm her and then put her back to my breast. Sometimes she just gets hungry and frantic. It helps when I stay calm and she can calm down. It also helps too if I hand express a little so my letdown isn't so fast. Is your baby getting frantic after not eating for a while? If so your letdown may be choking and frustrating them a little. Don't beat yourself up! Breastfeeding is hard. Try to focus on the good nursing sessions you have and the bonding time you get while feeding.
  • 10 weeks old and we have seen every shade of color from yellow to green to brown. Normal! You have to stop obsessing and just enjoy the relationship. Baby now only poops once a day, but has like 15 pee diapers (no joke). Only worry about what the doctor said. Their stomachs change so much as they mature. During a growth spurt babies absorb so much of our milk that not much is left over anyway. Relax, momma! It will be so much better when you let baby lead the way!
  • LO's poop is a hunter green now and kinda thick. I am going to ask about this on Wednesday and he is only going once a day for about 2 weeks now. I was wondering if his formula has something to do with it. I'm not sure.
  • My LOs poop is green. It has been for almost a week and she is 6 w 2 d. I also examine every diaper. So what you are all saying is green is normal?
  • Oh this is me too. I think I'm driving my husband nuts over how much I think about the color of her poop.

She has had green poop for a few weeks now, after starting off with the normal mustard color ones. My lactation consultant said yellowish green is fine. Spinach green can be of concern. That may indicate a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. I have been block feeding to make sure she is getting more hindmilk. Totally she had a huge mustard colored poop and I was so excited. Again, I think my husband thought I was nuts, but I felt like I had made huge progress!

Me = little kid on Xmas morn when poo turns mustard yellow! Then it changes back and I am seriously depressed. It's such an emotional cluster***.

To pp, I think green is ok for formula fed because formula takes longer to be processed so don't worry. But with ebf it might mean a fore/hindmilk imbalance- my Lc says that this is very rare and not to stress...but I have no idea. My next stop is to have Lc come in again and join la Leche. I have to do something or I'll go crazy!

Ladies, thank you to everyone who has posted. Makes me feel less alone. So appreciative of you guys
