Who quit smoking?

I'm hoping this might be an opportunity for a little support group. I used to smoke cigarettes (a pack every couple of days). I quit a few weeks before I found out I was pregnant. It's going pretty well but occasionally I think about it. Don't read that to say that I consider smoking one, I just think about them occasionally. Anyone else quit recently? How's it going?

Re: Who quit smoking?

  • I've never smoked, but just wanted to give you some encouragement for quitting! That's awesome! I know nicotine really is addictive so it's not an easy thing. Way to go!

  • I too haven't smoked but how wonderful that you quit for you and your baby! Great job and hang in there =)
  • Like you, I quit a few weeks before I found out we were pregnant with my first (back in 2011). I felt ready on my own to do it finally. I was using nicorette gum on occasion to ease the cravings, but had to stop that cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant, so that was a little tough. It was definitely hard! But, as I'm sure you feel, I just knew I couldn't do it anymore for the baby.

Good luck! It's really great that you quit. You will start to feel so much better physically from it. Sometimes when I get a night out and have a few drinks, I will get the urge to have an occasional smoke (before I was pregnant again, obviously) and it's amazing how repulsive it is now when I try. I used to be so immune to the smell and taste, but man, it's gross! You'll get there too, I bet. It just takes time. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the encouragement ladies!! I quit cold turkey because I just knew it was time. It actually was a lot easier that I had thought it would be. I'm already at the point where the smell of cigarette smoke make me a little nauseated! So glad I quit!!

  • Like PP, I've never been a smoker but kudos to you guys for managing to quit. I saw my aunts and grandfather struggle to quit for year and years so I at least have a vague idea of just how difficult it can be. Keep it up, you can do it!
  • I've never smoked, but awesome job ladies who did and have now quit! Keep up the good work.

Congrats ladies! I quit as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I struggled for a few days but don't miss smoking at all. I've had trouble quitting previously but it was much easier this time knowing I was pregnant - therefore I felt like I had no other choice. My husband is trying to quit too but it's been much harder for him!
  • I had my last cigarette the day we started trying. There were a few times before I knew for sure that I was pregnant that I thought about wanting one but didn't just in case I was already pregnant. Which was good since I got pregnant immediately. Haven't considered smoking since and have been impressed with the lack of cravings. I was worried this was going to be harder than it's been but I've never had motivation like this before. Like it isn't even an option I'll entertain which has been a relief.

Good luck. It's a really hard habit to break! I'm proud of both of us!

  • I quit with my son. It was super easy and I was surprised! However I had PPD and I started again. I felt that I had control over that one little thing. I was able to sneak away before he woke up. He was about 6 months when I started again. I never smoked around him.. Ever. This baby it was a little harder to quit. I don't have the urge to buy any.. But it's hard when I'm around it. I've had a couple friends butt hurt over the fact I'd rather do lunch alone. It'll get better and soon you don't ever give it a thought.
  • Good for you on quitting and I hope it continues to be easy for you!

I was never a heavy smoker but I'd have a few if I was drinking. DH and I had been on a beer and cigarette kick all summer but I had my last beer and cigarette on the last day of my period since I thought we might get pregnant this cycle. I've thought about it a few times but never came close. DH will still smoke every now and then and the smell grosses me out.

I had a friend that quit cold turkey while pregnant but she started back up again in the third tri. She's only have like 1 a day. Her baby was born early and had some complications. Low birth weight and he was a premie. I always wondered if it was because she smoked and because of that I am not at all tempted to even have one.
  • I've been cold-turkey for a little over a month now!!! We can do this :) I too was a pack every couple of days, for ten years!!

  • @BPaisley, @leopardprintchucks, @joose159, @jennk0118, and @taralynnosullican a very big congratulations on kicking the habit too!!  And thank you to everyone else for all of the support.  It's definitely worth it!  We can do it because, after all, we have the most powerful motivator of all, the health of a precious little baby.

  • Well done all of you! Best thing I ever did. Gave up 5 years ago. For ladies that are still struggling to give up, I would highly recommend the book by Alan Carr "The easy way to stop smoking" Amazing book helped me give up after cold turkey and patches failed. Funny read and changes the way you view smoking forever.
  • I think about it all the time! I quit when I got the positive test. It's super hard, but give your self a break too! Your basically learning how to do everyday tasks in a whole new way (without cigarettes). Quitting smoking is like trying to write left handed after you've written right handed your entire life. It's hard and awkward and uncomfortable. Completely normal to still think about it, I'm guessing you smoked for a few years now like me (12 years) it's o ly been 1-2 months this isn't something you shake over night. Much luck!!!!
  • Congrats!!!

  • I smoked as a stress relief 1-2 cigs a night so it was easy to quit. My husband has never been able to quit so I'm thankful I'm the pregnant one.
  • Lurking from May 16. Congrats to you ladies who quit!! I'm 9 weeks cig-free myself. It's the best feeling in the world but was extremely difficult! So proud of all u ladies for making the same choice!
  • Yes, yes, yes!!!!!! I used to smoke about a pack once every other day. Depending if on the weekends If I drank then I am horrified now to say a pack just in the night. Eewwww! I actually quite the day I found out I was pregnant. I actually smoked a cigarette and then got a call about 10 min. After smoking that cigarette telling me that I was pregnant. I was elated!!!! However the first thing that ran through my mind after crying from excitement was I just smoked my last cigarette and it was Friday and was looking forward to my wine. However I know that smokers and social drinkers could relate that you have a realization. That your not going to get that fix anymore and you kinda panic. We'll at least I did, however we had been trying for 2 years and finally I am pregnant so I decided my baby was way more important. I changed my life drastically. I quite smoking, drinking, drinking coffee, continued moderate exercise, and eating the best way I could. That first week you can ask my husband I was a reck, the cravings at night for me were horrible since that is when I was used to smoking. After 3 weeks I no longer craved it on a normal basis. As for today I can say I am completely nicotine free for 1 month and a week. The best decision I have ever made. Breathing is great and also I try not to be around people who do smoke. I even got my husband to start to quite. I will admit I still like the smell of a cigarette when first lit, however after a min or two I don't want anything to do with it cause then too much of the smell starts to make me nauseous, even if I am across the backyard. My nose is so sensitive now. I also started to drink camomile tea since I did have problems with sleeping for awhile. I have changed so much in 1 month but would do it all over again and highly encourage anyone as well to keep with it, the changes you feel and knowing your baby isn't coming into the world with any smoke in there lungs is the best thing to feel as a proud momma. Just remember your doing GREAT!!!! Take it one day at a time. I hope this helps, cause knowing that I wasn't the only one having trouble for the first couple of weeks and talking about it was helpful for me. Good luck, and I hope everyone has a happy and healthy pregnancy.
  • I smoked for ten years, half a pack a day. Quit as soon as I saw the positive test result. It's been difficult, but not as difficult as I would have thought. The euphoric feeling of knowing I'm being a good mother is getting me through. DH has quit as well, so I guess that helps a lot, too...although he only smoked a couple a week anyway. Good luck, ladies!
  • I quit the day I got a positive test result! Over a month no cigarettes! Whooo! It definitely was difficult but worth it
  • Congrats to everyone!!
