Breast/bottle help!

We introduced LO bottle of breast milk today so daddy can help feed him. He's 3 weeks now and chose to use the Avent 1m+ bottles (since he's almost a month we skipped the newborn bottles) and he ate well with him . Problem is , he ate the whole 4 oz I pumped and poured in the bottle and was still hungry after that . I nursed him, he took the boob fine no problem and ate for another 15 minutes . Is this normal ? And how do I know how much to pump for dad next time to make sure I have enough for him?

Re: Breast/bottle help!

  • Look up "paced bottle feeding"on YouTube... The way "regular" bottle feeding works makes them drink it too fast and they don't realize they're full so they overeat..that might be why your LO ate so much. Was he actually drinking from the boob afterward, or just comfort sucking? My LO will be full but then still want to comfort suck after she's done eating. Just my two cents :)
  • Loading the player...
  • Maybe try the 0m+ nipples for a slower flow. Could be he's drinking more because it's easier to get than from the boob.
  • I second pp. I like doc Browns slow flow. They have this blue insert that slows them down when feeding. I'm not sure whether it's the bottle or lo, but we've been giving expressed milk since 2 weeks with no nipple confusion. I'm hoping it's because of the bottles! Good luck!

My LO only takes 2-3 ounces of breast milk per feeding from the bottle. We use preemie nipples and either Dr Brown or Minbie bottles.
Editing to add that she is 5 weeks old.
  • We began bottle feeding breast milk too at about 2.5 weeks and came across the same issue. I couldn't keep up with his demand. So I began supplementing with soy (easier on his tummy) formula. We prepare 2oz of formula plus 3oz of breast milk. Sometimes he finishes the whole thing, sometimes not.
