Itchy Rash?

Hi there! I'm new to the forum and I'm about 7 weeks 4 days pregnant with my first baby. Has anyone experienced an itchy rash on your neck, chest, abdomen and/or back? It started about 2 weeks ago and is driving me nuts.

Re: Itchy Rash?

  • Yes! But I had hives my entire last pregnancy and now have them again. It is rare and weird. I would consult a doctor. I take 2 Zyrtec, 2 Claritin and 2 Benadryl a day to keep mine at bay.

  • I had just noticed one on my neck right by my jaw bone ... its not big ... but does itch( not constantly ) . Im pretty sure i know what its from but skin does become more sensitive when pregnant . But maybe the doc can give a cream for it .
  • YES! My OB had nothing to tell me about it and does not think it's pregnancy related. Considering I've never had it before and it's only come up randomly since I've been pregnant I might get a second opinion with another Dr in the practice.

Benadryl cream did nothing, Zyrtec and benadryl did nothing. It's not hives, just red, itchy, and inflamed on my neck and chest.
  • I have them all over my legs and tummy. A friend of mine said she was on benadryl and thought it contributed to 3 miscarriages so Im terrified to touch the stuff. Just trying to moisturize in case its just dry skin. Just another thing to ask the Dr next week.

My OB didn't help me at all. I was seeing an allergist because I didn't know where they hives were coming from (didn't know I was pregnant at that time). I stayed with the allergist my whole pregnancy and he handled all things itchy. Seriously my OB didn't give a flying F about it.

  • During my second pregnancy. It turned out that I was having a reaction to the lotion that I had used for years. What's more is that it was very gentle lotion. I saw the dermatologist and basically was told that there are three things that can happen in pregnancy. 1) skin improves 2) skin stays the same 3) skin issues develop and get worse. Unfortunately, I fell into the third category during that pregnancy. If I were you, I would consult my OB and see what they say. I ended up taking Benadryl and also using Cortizone cream for a day or two to try to get the terrible itching/blistering under control. You should switch to a free & clear detergent, ditch the fabric softener and dryer sheets and use dove unscented sensitive skin soap only. Feel better soon mama!
  • I'm also so itchy! I have really dry skin and at first I thought it was that, but my husband said it looks like an allergic reaction. I can't determine if it's pregnancy related or the fact that I used to be on allergy meds and I can no longer take my old ones... I'm on Zyrtec and Rhinocort now, definitely missing my old meds! I've also started to break out crazy style!
  • I had a rash around my neck, not sure if it was preg related, but it was unexplained. Went away with aveeno oatmeal cream for itching.
  • Baby powder has been a lifesaver. I have very mild psoriasis & when I do get that baby powder helps immensely. Same thing with rashes in general.

  • Thanks so much for all of the helpful responses. I switched my soap to dove for sensitive skin. I'm hoping that will do the trick. I'm also wondering if maybe I've developed an allergy to my prenatals. Hoping to get to the bottom of this soon.
  • ^^^ That's the only kind of soap my skin will tolerate, it's great. :)

    Edited for clarification

  • Hi! I have nothing to add but I just wanted to suggest you change your user name. I assume that's your full name? Internet safety is important. Anything you write here is public and can be seen by anyone who googles you. Also, anyone here can now Google you which isn't safe at all. @Jennifer Berlinghoff
  • I'm sure it's too early for this, but I had the PUPPS rash after my DS was about 5months old. (Everything you read says it is mostly in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy.) I was one of the few unlucky ones that got it postpartum. It was miserable and so itchy they gave me a steroid cream that barely worked.

Benadryl was the only thing that helped me sleep or I would be up all night ripping my skin apart. It started on my stomach and then ended up all over my chest, arms, legs and stomach.
  • I started moisturizing lots and its clearing up thank goodness
