Re: chances of getting pregnant?

  • If you read the info that came with your pills it should give a break down of how effective it is.

  • My ob said after 4 weeks of the mini pill, we should be good to go without a condom. With the mini pill it's really important that you take it at the same time every day. I take mine in a half hour window.

So keep using that condom this week, then you should be ok!

  • I believe it's only 80% effective so pulling out or a condom is recommended in addition to the pill for max effectiveness. And like PP said, it HAS to be take at the same time every day or it's pointless.
  • Why do people think that pulling out is effective birth control? It isn't. Granted there's less sperm then without pulling out, but there's still sperm in pre-ejaculate and all it takes is 1 little swimmer. So if you don't want to take the chance at getting pregnant again, use a barrier in addition to the mini pill.
  • I agree take the pill at the same time daily. I'm not on it now, but remember that advice when I was on it before. I did just the pull out method for 4 years with my husband and didn't get pregnant until we tried. When I went over birth control at my 6 week check up, she said that and breastfeeding would be very effective.
  • My OB said merely breastfeeding does not and will not prevent pregnancy. Hence why I'm on the progesterone only pill.

Exclusive breastfeeding (by itself) is 98-99.5% effective in preventing pregnancy as long as all of the following conditions are met:

Your baby is less than six months old
Your menstrual periods have not yet returned
Baby is breastfeeding on cue (both day & night), and gets nothing but breastmilk or only token amounts of other foods.

Breastfeeding frequency and total amount of time spent breastfeeding per 24 hours are the strongest factors leading to the return of fertility: a mother is more likely to see the return of fertility if baby’s nursing frequency and/or duration is reduced, particularly if the change is abrupt.
In some populations, research has shown that night nursing slows the return to fertility.
One study showed that mothers who were separated from their infants (but expressed milk to provide 100% breastmilk for baby) had a higher pregnancy risk (5.2%) during the first 6 months (Valdes 2000).
The introduction of solid food can also be a factor in the return of fertility. Once baby starts solids (if mom’s cycles have not returned), the natural period of infertility may be prolonged by breastfeeding before offering solids, starting solids gradually, and not restricting nursing.

  • My cousins daughter was conceived with a condom and she was on the pill. Anything can happen so just always be cautious
  • You know, I had no idea the mini pill was supposed to be taken at the same time every day. My doctor didn't mention that and how careless of me to not read over it. I EBF and am on the mini pill but use nothing in addition to it. This has me kind of nervous now.
  • I conceived DS while taking the mini pill. Regardless of what people say, I KNOW I took it at the same time daily (I have a pill pack with an alarm on it.) However, I was on the mini pill for years before conceiving. It sounds lame but the only true way not to conceive is abstinence, with any bc there is always a chance.
