Tonsillectomy - am I crazy?!

I have always had bad problems with strep throat and other throat problems. I have huge tonsils, a family history of throat cancer and apparently one is larger than the other. I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea while pregnant and my pulmonologist suggested it might be cured if I got my tonsils out. Saw an ENT yeaterday and she wants to take them out. Scheduled my surgery for Dec 7th, since I don't have to go back to work until January, and I've already met my deductible and out of pocket for for this calendar year (yay?!!). LOL will be 11 weeks and we are currently EBF. Any mom's out there had this surgery as an adult? Am I crazy?!

I know it will be good in the long run, and I am trying to line up family to help me with LOL and his 4 year old brother. Any advice or tips? I have been pumping to try and build a supply for when I go back to work, but am now thinking that will be used after my surgrey.

Thanks for listening and for any advice!

Re: Tonsillectomy - am I crazy?!

  • Not crazy at all, you will be fine. I had knee surgery when my oldest was an infant. Better to do it now and get it over with. Good luck!

  • I had this surgery when I was 15. It was a rough couple of weeks but worth it in the end. To this day I don't get sick as often and I sleep better.
  • Just be prepared that it will hurt. I got it done a couple years ago and it was rough. My biggest suggestion is set a timer while you're sleeping to wake up and take a pain pill. The mornings are the worst so I wish I did that. It's been amazing since though, well worth it! I think I've had 1 sore throat since? And it was from post nasal drip. Haven't had strep since
  • I got it done when I was 17, the same year I got my wisdom teeth out. I thought the wisdom teeth were worse than the tonsils. The tonsils just felt like having strep throat. And the most exciting part of that is that it will be the last time!
  • It's worth it but very painful. Had it done in college and up to then was the worst pain ever experienced. As much as it hurts to, push the fluids. I didn't and ended up on IVs.
  • I was 20 when I had this done. ROUGH time for a month! Kids bounce back in days but as an adult I had a heck of a time. Lost over 20 lbs but didn't have 20 lbs to loose, so I looked AWFUL!!!! Make sure you have help for a while after. They will send you home with strong liquid pain meds!! It's very, very painful.
  • When I was in high school, I was in the hospital for my endometriosis and had to have major abdominal surgery to deal with it. My roommate was a 40+ woman who had to get her tonsils removed (she was placed in the Peds unit because they knew how to handle the tonsils cases better than other nurses).

She was by far the whinest patient in the room. I don't know if it's because it really is that painful or if she had no tolerance for pain. Here I was dealing with a huge abdominal incision (like where my c-section was) and she was the one crying and asking for more pain meds.

The nurse said adults are terrible patients for that procedure and don't bounce back like kids do.

Hopefully it won't be that bad for you!
  • I would rather vaginally deliver another baby than have my tonsils out as an adult again!!! Lol THATS how painful and miserable it was. Not trying to scare you, just make sure you have around the clock help for at least a week or more.
  • Thanks for all the replies! I am making sure to arrange help for the first 4 days. After that I may have to wing it. Really hoping it's not as bad as most stories I hear, but I keep telling myself no matter how bad it is, it will have to get better, right?!

I had strep throat 12 times in 12 months, so they took mine out! They tried for 6 months but they have to be healthy to be taken out and I kept getting sick!!! Have not had strep since!! Yay! Now my throat will get scratchy and sore but it's nothing compared to how it use to be. It will be worth it.
  • I had my tonsils out while I was in college and it was a horrible two weeks, but well worth it in the long run. I agree with previous poster though, I would rather have another vaginal delivery without meds then go through that pain again. Stock up on soft foods! And push lots of fluids.
