car seats and accidents

I've been searching on google and the bump but I can't find the answer to my question. So if anyone has an input I would appreciate it! I'm due any day now, and SO was T-boned tonight and the car is totaled. We had just installed the new car seat (of course) and although there is no apparent damage, I know that after accidents they say you should replace them. Are we supposed to replace the whole thing, or just the base? The seat detaches from the base like most infant car seats do. I'm so bummed but happy that he is okay.

Re: car seats and accidents

  • We were told the whole unit by our fire department. That being said if you have insurance you might be able to claim it.

  • 100% replace it! Your insurance should cover it

  • I second PP on all parts. Local PD told me that insurance should replace the car seat.
  • I was told the same thing as PP only mine came from the hospital workers at the hospital and the local fire dept. .. I was told that insurance should replace it.. With this being a question about car seats.. Hypothetically what if the car seat base was in the car but not the car seat? Would you still have to replace the whole thing or no? My husband sometimes drives like a maniac and our base is in his truck for now and I'm worried he will get into an accident.. Do I just have to replace the base since the car seat isn't in the car or do I still have to get another car seat? I figured just another base but I figured I would ask just Incase..

Sorry to high jack for a moment!! Glad your SO is ok OP!!!

Anytime a carseat is in an accident whatever portion was in the car needs to be replaced.

That's what I figured.. Thank you for clarifying even though it probably seemed like a pretty dumb question!!
