Daycare center vs in home

Just curious for people that have their kids In daycare If you are using a center or in home daycare (at someone else's house). We have our daughter in a center that's like a kindercare and its about the same price as in home daycare In our area. So price aside, what are the pros and cons of each? Since she started last week she's gotten sick (which I'm sure will happen anywhere) and diaper rash. She never had diaper rash until she started daycare. They say they change diapers every two hours but they won't wake her from her nap to change her. But she's very quiet and calm so she will wake up from her nap and just lay there so they just think she's still sleeping. So her diaper changes get prolonged. Kind of frustrating and I'm definitely going to talk to them about it. But it got us thinking that maybe an in home where they are only allowed one baby per worker she would maybe be paid attention to more? So just curious on others thoughts!

Re: Daycare center vs in home

  • In home isn't 1 baby per worker. Depending on your state it could be 10 per worker. Most states allow 4 per worker. It really depends if the in home worker is certified or not. Personally I think daycare centers are better because the children can learn more in my opinion.

  • There are pros and cons to each, but what will tell you the most is going to visit the centers and in-home daycares.  I've used in-home daycares until age 3, then preschool.  Also, check references.

  • Yea, in-home is definitely not always 1 baby per staff member. My LO is in an in-home daycare and there are 4 babies (under 1 year old) and 5 toddlers with 3 workers (so a ratio of 3:1). Your state will have specific regulations on what ratio is appropriate. Definitely go and visit before you join up and call their references! Ask to see their CPR/first aid certifications and license for their daycare.

We were debating between a center and an in-home and decided to do the in-home for the first 2-3 years so LO has more one-on-one interaction, then move to a center when he's getting older and closer to school age so he can begin learning routines, etc. that will be helpful for starting school.

  • Sorry I think I said it wrong. They are allowed 8 kids but only 1 baby for each worker. So one baby and 7 other different age kids.

My son goes to a state licensed church daycare. 4:1 infant adult ratio. They document diaper changes (time and #1/#2), number of naps and duration, and time and oz of each bottle. I am blessed. He has never had diaper rash and I'm sure it's because they change his diaper more often than I would. Plus there are a couple "grandmas" so he gets a lot of individual attention. Have you looked into any church daycares in your area?
