perineum massage

I have read that if you give yourself perineum massages before you give birth, this can help stretch out your girly bits to avoid tearing or being cut. Was wondering if any second-time moms have had experience with that, did it help?

and would it be beneficial to start early like in your 2nd trimester ? or is that a no no

Thanks

Re: perineum massage

  • I'm a FTM but this is something I plan on doing later on in the pregnancy.

  • I mentioned it to my doctor during my last pregnancy.  She said it wasn't necessary, but couldn't hurt to try.  She also mentioned that they massage the perineum during labor to aid the stretching.  You may want to see if your practice does the same.

DH did it for me a few times, but not consistently.  I ended up with one stitch.

I did it. Didn't have any tearing or stitches with the birth of my DS.  That being said, I have no idea if there is any accurate correlation between perineum massaging and a lower rate of tearing.

  • I'm also a FTM so no experience as such but I do know that it is recommended to start with 10 mins a day from 34 weeks. Research does suggest that it reduces tears so I will definitely be giving it a try!
  • My OB did this during labor. I had a slight tear. I didn't do it prior...might this time though!
  • I did this almost my entire first pregnancy and still tore pretty badly :( but I'm still doing it with this one for good luck, haha.

  • I did this most of my last pregnancy and ended up with an episiotomy and a natural tear. My OB massaged and used oils during labor, too. I think it's just one of those things where if you're meant to tear, you will. If you aren't, lucky you.
  • Ok, I'll be that FTM who says I didn't know this was a thing and I didn't know tearing was so common. Now you have me freaked out and I'm only 10 weeks. Good grief!

Most tears are pretty minor and you'll be too distracted by the fact that someone just handed you a baby to worry too much about the stitches they're putting in :)
  • I meant to do it but never did. This time I have to because of scar tissue from my first birth that I didn't massage properly earlier on because I'm lazy.
  • I got an episiotomy but my son was 23 inches and 10 lbs, I birthed a 1 month old basically. So.... I think I would have torn either way. But my nurse did massage while I was giving birth. Also, idk why but when I read about the massage it feaks me out and makes me feel weird.
