Teething

I was lurking over on the April board and came across a discussion about teething gels/tablets. After I read the info I looked it up. I found this:
https://www.fda.gov/forconsumers/consumerupdates/ucm230762.htmI

https://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm306062.html

The fda release is from 2013.
I'm not trying to start a debate, I'm just freaking out because I've never heard of this. I've been giving LO Hylands gel and used Orajel with DS.
Thoughts?

Mine also said page not found.
  • One article from 2011 says that benzocaine can result in a rare disorder called methemoglobinema which can lead to death. Basically is only for children 2 and up. It's not in hyland products but is in regular Orajel.
The other article says that belladonna which is in hylands can be toxic for babies. Belladonna is also known as deadly night shade. That is why the product is not FDA approved. The FDA has asked consumers to discard or stop using Hyland tablets.
I found this information on the FDA website.
    WTF?
Can someone come in and correct me if I'm wrong?

The hyland teething tablets were recalled and reformulated after that came out. Belladonna has to be given in crazy amounts for it to cause issues. The amount in the teething tablets is not high enough.

Yes this happened years ago and I went to the hyland website yesterday and when you click on teething tablets you can see the ingredients and how much they out of the belladonna. I think as long as we follow directions on how long and how much then we will be fine. The hyland teething gel I think has less belladonna than the tablets but I'm not sure. Anyways thank you for sharing it, after you posted the links I went online to research. It is always good to research everything just to be informed and for the safety of our little ones!!
  • What a relief! Thanks ladies. At least now I'm aware. I had no idea teething gel could be toxic.
  • That's why I only buy hyland teething gel and tablets, non of their products have benzocaine!
  • Thanks for the info!!!! We were going to use both the oragel and the hylands... But now I don't think that we will do either! I was a little suspicious when PPs said that the hylands made their babies fall asleep right away. My baby needs pain relief, not a sedative!

I have been cutting big slices of refrigerated organic apple and giving her those to suck on. She requires supervision, but it helps much more than her gel toys.
  • I have been using the Hylands more this week and LO seems to know they will make him feel better, he gladly opens his mouth for them. I have to regular and night time which help with sleep. The regular ones dont put him to sleep though.
  • Another note.... my LO has had some pretty rosey cheeks lately, no fever or anything but they stay pretty red. I've heard that is a sign of teething.
