Hysterical at the breast!

My LO is a month tomorrow and lately she's been having these random bouts of hysteria when feeding and I can't figure out what the problem is!

At least once a day, sometimes twice, but generally at night (around now), she will nurse from one side for about 10 min then all of a sudden start having trouble staying latched, pulls back, screams, and goes back on several times. I burp her then switch sides. Generally during the transition or burping she stops crying and is fine! She will then nurse from the other side for a similar amount of time (10-12 min) and then start the same behaviors. I massage my breasts in case it's because she's not getting enough and sometimes when she is pulling back i check and can see I'm still expressing milk (definitely not as much at the start!).

Anyone have any idea what this issue could be? She also kicks me and stretches out when she's pulling back and unlatching and relatching. I assumed gas for a while and have tried to massage her belly, burp her, and other techniques for gas.

Just as an FYI- generally when she nurses she will calmly nurse for almost 20-25 min and then fall asleep and I have to wake her up. She's currently hysterical and has been for quite some time. Is my baby becoming colic? Why does it only happen randomly if that is the case??

Re: Hysterical at the breast!

  • My LO does the exact same thing. Not sure why either.

  • The lactation lady at WIC told me that typically the pulling or tugging they do at the great usually means the milk isn't flowing as fast as they want. I find my LO does that when it slows down so I'll switch him to the other side. By the time he's doing it with that side (5-10 minutes) the other side has had enough time for the milk to go from "storage" to ready to drink and flows quicker again.
  • My LO does the same, but mostly in the evenings, when my supply is the lowest. I hate it when he does this :(
  • The exact same thing is happening with my little guy. It only happens between 9pm and midnight. Help!!
  • My LO does this when he just wants to comfort suck and milk keeps coming out but he doesn't want it to. Unfortunately, pacifiers don't work for him as I haven't found one he truly likes. The fact that you LO becomes content when you take her off the breast for a few makes me think maybe that's what she wants as well? If she were still hungry, taking her off the breast would probably make it worse as opposed to better. My son also has this reaction when I have a second let down. I have a very forceful let down and he has a hard time keeping up, typical after he's eaten for a while, he is tired and doesn't want to deal with another let down. Good luck mama! If you have more issues, you may check out the Breastfeedig Board as they might have some additional advice for you.
  • My daughter does this as well around 8-9pm. I've realized that is the time of night she is feeling overstimulated. After a few minutes of trying to feed her I've found it isn't what she wants even though she acts like it is. I stop trying and let my husband comfort her and within a few minutes she calms down and falls asleep. I think by the end of the day both she and I are exhausted and we are feeding off each other's energy. The little break away makes us both feel better.
