Swellng in back side of knee

I haven't swelled at all during pregnancy (yet), but this morning I woke up with swelling on the back side of my knee and am slightly worried. 2 weeks ago I went to the ER for chest pain, he couldn't find a reason for it, asked if I had swelling and or pain behind my knees in case of blood clot, I didn't then, but now I do. I called my OB's office and the nurse really didn't know what to say about it.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this? I might go to my primary care doctor (it's just a tiny office as I live in a very small town) tomorrow if it's still swollen/hurting. The pain is very minimal, more annoying than it is hurting.

Sorry for the long post, just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

Re: Swellng in back side of knee

  • My mom had this when she had my brother and then went to sleep and woke up with a purple swollen leg, it was pretty intense pain though she said. In the end it was a clot.

  • Thanks for the reply, I'll be going to the clinic tomorrow @thisusername
  • Not trying to scare you! This is just her experience. My labs were abnormal when the tested me for clots so i make her tell me daily what to look out for. Hopefully it's nothing and it's just an ache. I'll be thinking of you and sending as many good thoughts as I can!
Let me know how it goes.
  • Id rather go just to make sure it's nothing serious, vs. not going and it end up being a clot! I'm a worry wart anyway! I will keep you posted, thank you!
  • I have had pain/swelling around my knees and my OB said it was because of the extra weight I am carrying around and that weight putting strain on my knees/joints. Glad you're getting checked out- better to check and it be nothing, rather than not check and it be something serious!
  • Thanks for the response, @robinj716! I find it odd because it's only on the back of my left knee. Pregnancy is too weird, lol I feel like I have a different symptom every week.

Is there a lump at all? It could be a bursitis, if you stand for long periods with your knee locked. Just a thought! Or a Baker's Cyst, from the same reason as the bursitis.

Edited: forgot to add the Baker's Cyst part.
  • There's no lump I read about baker's cysts but I don't think it's that! Thanks, @22snc12. The swelling seems to be almost gone and no pain so I'm going to hold off going to the clinic unless it gets worse!

Since your doctor had mentioned blood clots before I'd still go in for the peace of mind, but that's just me!
  • @Achae thanks, I might. The problem is I live 70 miles from a hospital that does ultrasounds (which I read is how they find clots) so if I go to my towns clinic I'm just worried they won't do anything because it's so small and they don't have the technology?

No problem :-)! Definitely have it checked out though.

They may be able to rule it out without the ultrasound. They should still do as much as possible.

They may be able to diagnose with a hand held doppler, like what they use to hear baby's heartbeat.  I don't think you need to worry about anyone not taking you seriously - DVTs can be a pretty big deal for pregnant women, and they should acknowledge that.

  • I agree with PP - I called my OB's office last month complaining of shortness of breath that had been bothering me for a few weeks.  She IMMEDIATELY had me go in to the ER to be evaluated for a blood clot.  No other symptoms.  But she told me to go right away.  They took it very seriously.  And honestly when I read the subject line of your post, that was the first thing I thought - blood clot.  Does the area feel warm at all?  I would do your best to get it checked out, if at least to give you peace of mind!!

  • What did you end up doing? Like others, my first thought was potential clot. It also could be a varicose vein, which tend to get worse and sometimes more painful with pregnancy.

  • Something similar happened to me beginning of October. I have a blood clot in my left lung. Now on lovenox Injections twice daily. Don't mess with it. Get checked out mama!

  • I didn't end up going. Talked to my sister in law who is a nurse and said unless it's red/purple, gets bigger, or moves to my calf I should be okay. Now reading comments I wonder if I should go just to be safe. The swelling is still there, but hardly and there is no pain at all.
  • Just an update- I called my local clinic and made an appointment for Friday afternoon! They are never booked full, except the one time I really what to go! That's what I get for waiting to go in. Thank you for all the advice!
  • If anything changes though, or gets worse don't wait :)
  • Thanks for updating... please let us know how it works out!  My anxiety is out of control lately.  Not only am I worried about myself and LO, I've been worrying about you too!  As @RHrebien said, definitely go in if there are any changes!

  • @PinkRoses I hear you about the worrying, it never ends does it?! Thank you for thinking of me, I hate to be another worry for you though. I will keep you posted. Happy thanksgiving! Thank you @RHrebien as well!
  • My primary care doctor says she's pretty certain it is just a bakers cyst! Thanks all for the comments and concerns!
  • @hnull glad you got in and that they aren't worried about a clot!
  • Glad you got checked out and are doing well!
