Noro Virus

Hi everyone!
I'm a teacher and we've had two cases of noro at two different schools (none in mine thank goodness!). I told my principal that since its a small town if we had a confirmed case in our school even if I wasn't sick I needed to not be in the building until the student wasn't contagious anymore (48 hours) for my baby's safety. All the staff/moms seemed totally cool with this, but my principal seemed really put out. Are other people dealing with the same/similar issue of dangerous infections and having to put your foot down for your baby?

I have had this issue in a previous pregnancy. They have never excused us for norovirus (I caught it post partum as did DS at 3 months old...then I caught it again when DS was 1 year...not fun year for ER visits...I also work in a dirty school). They did require that a student with chicken pox stay home in order to not infect unvaccinated students and to protect the pregnant teachers when I was pregnant with DS. Schools are serious germ factories. In general, I've stayed much healthier when I habitually shower as soon as I get home and flush out my sinuses. Good luck!

  • We had an outbreak at my work (hospital) two years ago. No one was excused for any reason unless you were sick. Really unless you are in direct contact with the infected person or touching the same things you should be fine. Just wash wash wash your hands. You may be able to ask to wear gloves and a mask if you are that worried.

That being said...I honestly thought I was going to die a few hours when I had it. My husband did not get it though. So take that as a bit of comfort maybe.
  • I have gotten it before and it sucks...a lot. Unfortunately I'm not sure how much it would help to be out of the school away from the student because the bacteria can live on surfaces. Probably the best thing to do is just not touch your face/mouth and be careful of what you touch and wash your hands a lot. I'm not a teacher but my husband is and has shared similar stories, schools can be so tough on teachers! You could always just call in sick if it happens without feeling the pressure to justify it. It is scary thinking about all the illnesses we can get when pregnant in the fall/winter but there is only so much we can do--try not to stress!
