What do you pick up?

Hey I'm just full of questions tonight.. My stepson fell asleep in the car when I was dropping older stepson at church. He weighs about 55 pounds. I felt bad he was so tired... But I know I shouldn't have picked him up. Everything should be okay with the baby right?

Re: What do you pick up?

  • If you're used to the weight, then I wouldn't be too concerned.  My doctor allows me to pick up up to 35 pounds at work because I am used to the weight already.  Plus, I don't think it could hurt considering it was only the one time.  As long as you're not in pain and baby seems fine, I think you're in the clear.

  • I think the guidelines are for everyday activities. Like if you lift your step son everyday or have a job where you lift a lot. Also as long as you didn't feel any strain on your body you should be fine for a one time thing
I have stopped picking up my 46lb dog and I can't carry my 30lb toddler for long periods of time because I get pain
  • Thanks. I'm just freaking out. I knew I shouldn't have picked him up big he was out cold. I felt a tiny strain in my stomach area but not bad. I normally don't pick up heavy objects.

  • I picked my son up quite a bit in the beginning of my pregnancy and hurt my ab muscles. :( So now I try to refrain. He's about 35 pounds. You'll probably be ok if you don't make it a habit.

You're not going to hurt anything by having lifted him, but it might make you sore. I regularly (many times a day) lift 50+ lbs at work, even though I'm not supposed to, and the worst that happens is you get a little sore.

ETA: I sometimes get contractions from lifting. If that happens, just drink a couple glasses of water and sit down for a while, or take a bath (my MWs recommendation, but I'm not a bath person)

  • I pick up as little as possible. But I have been known to pick up and carry my German Shepards food and that's about 50lbs or so. I don't recommend picking up heavy items unless completely needed.. Sounds like in your case you didn't really have an option. The baby should be fine.
  • My 3 year old is 35 pounds and still in the crib. Lifting him over the rail is getting to be tough on my back! We're planning to transition him to a bed soon, just haven't gotten around to it. But it needs to be done for sure.

Also, I'm an RN, and I do a lot of transferring patients when I work. But I work part time and haven't been in for about a month! I'm getting nervous for how my backs going to feel after my shifts that are coming up very soon:/

So, no advice here - but I'll commiserate!

  • I have to still pick up DS and carry him around sometimes. He's only 22 lbs but it still hurts during the day occasionally but he still can't walk on his own yet.
  • I pick DS up about twice a day to lift him into either his car seat or booster seat at the kitchen table when he is just moving too slow or he's feeling lazy. He is 31 pounds. I just listen to my body and trust it to tell me when I am doing too much.

  • Baby is fine. I less you have orders from your doctor to refrain from lifting you and baby are fine. I just find I get tired faster and don't have the strength I did in my core...i pick up my 54 pound son and 37 pound daughter a lot.
  • I have to lift my toddler quite a bit. The colder the weather gets, the more loads of wood I have to bring from the main wood pile to our stash under the porch and the from there always bring a stack inside. The trips are becoming more frequent as the temps get colder. Oak isn't exactly lightweight lol. But I use the lifting rule as a general guideline and just listen to my body. If I start getting contractions I'll stop, rest and have water. But my body is used to this so I'm usually fine
  • I lift my freshly 3 year old quite a bit. 42lbs. I'm definitely doing it less now though.. Not only because of pregnancy but man is he heavy. More so helping him into the car seat or if he gets tired or hurt. I don't know for sure but I think you should be just fine!

  • I lift my daughter and she's about 25 lbs. Long stretches tire me out and so I have to rest and drink water after. I think it also hurts my SPD to carry her so I try to do it as limited as possible.
  • I actually asked my doctor if the lifting restriction was for my health or the baby's health.  She said it's to protect me.  I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Today I had to lift an 11 year old off the floor because I wasn't going to deal with her spoiled behavior and fake tantrum. Her parents have never said no seriously before, she weighs 74 pounds, and was kicking, but everything is fine. And she's grounded. Because I don't give a crap how "sorry" you are, you're 11 and you know better.
  • My MW hasn't really given me any restrictions YET. I'm due March 2nd, so a little behind you probably, but I still work out twice a week, like lifting weights and conditioning. As PPs said, as long as you don't feel any bad strain or pain you're probably fine.

  • I'm in the same boat my LO is about 22/23 lbs and not walking yet, the hardest part for me is all the stairs we have in our house. My LO knows how to climb up the stairs but does not know how to come down the stairs on his own. I stand behind him and let him climb the stairs so I don't have to carry him up.
  • I work as a vet tech in an animal hospital and have to pick up/carry dogs pretty frequently. The personal cut-off limit I'm comfortable with is about 40 lbs - if the dog is any heavier than that, I ask one of my co-workers to help me out.
  • Ask your doctor about your specific restrictions to be sure

I plan to pick up my daughter until baby is born or until I'm told I can't....even then I'm sure I'll end up doing it here and there anyways. she probably about 25lba
