Recieving blankets

We have tons of receiving blankets we got as gifts from the shower. Haven't really used them for anything ... Just wondering what you ladies use your receiving blankets for so they don't just sit there . Thanks!

Re: Recieving blankets

  • Swaddling until the blanket gets to small then use as burp cloths or in the stroller.

  • Well, I keep a flannel one in my diaper bag and one in our diaper caddy to change lo on. Also, baby girl spits up so bad that we use the cotton ones in the place of burp cloths, because those don't help us at all.
  • I cover LO's legs when he naps in the swing - we keep him in an onesie at home. I also tuck them around him when he's in the car seat for a ride or walk - he sleeps longer if his arms don't flail around and it also keeps him warm.
  • We use them for everything but mainly to protect ourselves from spit-up. I go through about 7 a day, and we have about 30 total. We got so many packs from DD1.
  • What type (material/brand) receiving blankets do you all have/use/like?

I have several flannel ones that I feel like don't absorb anything and I have a pack of thin cotton ones by carters that I like, but don't know where to find them to buy more.

I've found that I really like the Aden and an a is muslin swaddle blankets to wrap around lo in the car seat, swimg, etc.

We have all three types (flannel, thin cotton & muslin). We got the cotton ones at Babies R Us btw.
Also, I remembered one more way we use them: as a quick car seat cover to protect LO from sun or rain. And in my mommy support group one lady was using the one from Aden & Anais as nursing cover.
  • We use them for spit up too or I'll lay it under him during feelings because I tend to have an overactive let down. Also when we are out I change him on one and we swaddle in the Aden and anais ones at night.
  • I mainly use them to wrap her up before and after her bath. Otherwise we don't really use ours. I use cloth diapers for burp cloths.
  • I have so many and I don't really use them either. My LO doesn't ever spit up so the burp cloth isn't a useful function. I wrap her in an actual blanket when she's in her bouncer, car seat, or stroller. I swaddle with one of those swaddles with Velcro. I seriously have like 30 receiving blankets that never get used. I washed a lot of them to prepare for baby so I can't donate them or take them back.
  • We uses ours all day long. My little guy gets swaddled at night, he will lay on one when he's having tummy/back play time. I will pit them on my lap when he's eating so he is sitting on them. I will cover him with one when he's taking his nap in my arms. He also gets one thrown in the car to cover him from the sun/wind/rain.
  • I have the flannel ones and use them to line the bassinet where her head is. Basically I fold it in half, place it flat where her head would be to catch spit up, and tuck in the sides under the mattress so it doesn't bunch up. It's much easier in the middle of the night to replace the blanket instead of changing the whole sheet if she spits up.
  • I use them to cover his legs in the car seat, stroller and swing. Also have used them to change him on when we are out.
  • I only have about 5 thankfully and they are hand me downs from a friend (STM here). I use them to cover the changing pad so if he pees, I just change the blanket not the whole pad. Works great so far. With my DD, I had a ton. I saved some for her for baby dolls, used a few to wrap baby shower gifts with, then gave some away, and cut some up to use for dust rags.
  • I use them to cover surfaces when I change LO somewhere other then home. Then wash them after if it's a gross public washroom..if it's a friends floor and it's still clean it will ride in the diaper bag for awhile. Also I cover LO when she is in her swing or other things like that...if DD1 holds her I have her use one (DD1 is worried about puke). Burping and breastfeeding I always have one handy. I truly use them a lot and wash them a lot. I'm kind of a neat freak and don't like germs so they become handy in random situations. Also just wiping LO's chin or me after a feeding...once you start using them they become quite handy! I have a drawer full and they will become great doll blankets for the girls dolls when we don't need them!
