Food Suggestions

Before I was pregnant, I was a fairly healthy eater. We barely kept any bread/carbs in our house & focused mostly on chicken, ground turkey, & fish with veggies/salad. Now, the idea of eating fish & veggies grosses me out. I cooked fish yesterday & couldn't eat it. Saved it for today & I have absolutely no appetite for it. All I want are foods full of carbs or better said "junk food": bagels/cream cheese, burgers, chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, mozzarella sticks... and, right now, I would love a pan con bistec! That's a steak sandwich on cuban bread with shoestring potato chips & ketchup! Do you ladies have any food suggestions that I could try ? I shouldn't keep eating junk!

I'm right there with you! All I want are carbs, carbs, and carbs

  • No real suggestions (because I'm in the same boat) but I've found some lightened up versions of some of my favourite comfort foods on skinnytaste.com. I'm trying to cook at home (e.g. make panko crusted chicken nuggets instead of McDonalds or whatever) to hopefully lessen the sodium and fat. I want to vomit when I see or smell vegetables. My husband made a roasted broccoli salad the other night and I had to leave the house.
  • It seems like you are having salty cravings, but I am in a similar boat of being revolted by what I used to eat. Meat disgusts me now, but I am still craving protein. I found that I'm eating tons of almonds, and I have a bit more of a sweet tooth, so I put a table spoon of chocolate chips in Greek yogurt for the protein and sweetness. You could maybe try some fried plantains too. Not super healthy but better than the salty temptation of mozzarella sticks?
  • @mistkeeper -- a+ recommendation on the chocolate chips and greek yogurt. I will definitely try that. I'm also craving sweet things but I don't have an aversion to fruit like I do vegetables so I haven't resorted to a pint of ice cream (yet). Hey, it balances out the fried food right? Haha.

Ohh gosh I can relate to you so much. I ate mostly gluten free pre pregnancy but now the only thing that makes my stomach feel better is gluten. I agree with PP about skinnytaste.com. There are good recipes on that site. I've had to get creative with my cooking to add in some healthy carbs and try not to overdo it.
  • I would suggest to make healthier versions of the foods you are craving. Like baked, coconut crusted chicken strips. They are so easy to make and so good. And you get the illusion of them being breaded like nuggets with the coconut. Baked sweet potatoes may help with the mashed potato craving, starchy tasting but full of vitamin a and not as empty as regular potatoes.
  • Also try some "healthier" carbs, like Sweet potato.

Also, protein shakes or simply blended frozen fruit make great "desserts". I also freeze Greek yogurts. Some of the flavored ones are like ice cream when frozen!

  • Thank you so much for all the suggestions! Sweet potato fries sound delicious! Don't know why I didn't think of it. Going to buy a bag tomorrow. Also going to try the homemade chicken tenders. I really have to try to change my new eating habits!
  • Maybe try some bean salads? Like beans with cucumbers? Cheese? Tomatoes? Yummy dressing? Salty and you're still getting some protein.

  • All of your cravings sound amazing to me lol! I agree with you though; before I got pregnant I ate so many raw veggies. Now they don't sound very appealing. Cottage cheese with tomato slices and a little salt and pepper has been tasting crazy good to me lately. If you have to have carbs, just reach for the complex ones and eat them with protein. For example, I've been favoring whole wheat English muffins with natural peanut butter. Yum!

But I also ate a donut today, so...

  • I really wouldn't worry too much. I used to be super healthy and eat only fish, lean meats and veg. Now all of these disgust me! All midwives and doctors recommend eating whatever you fancy as the baby will get everything it needs either from you or your prenatal vitamins! It's only the first few months after all so don't feel bad. I have been living off mash potato and cereal and I normally eat very few carbs...lol

  • I have been getting my greens in by making smoothies. It's the only way my body wants to eat healthy right now. :/ I do organic baby spinach, half a banana, some blackberries & chia seeds. Then sometimes I'll just make a huge blueberry/blackberry smoothie. It hits the spot!
  • I've been craving BK whoppers like nobody's business! And I'm not a fast food eater! Healthy foods that have been easy on my stomach are things that are mostly bland - pita chips & hummus, cottage cheese, toast, and rice.
