Risk of high blood pressure / pre eclampsia

Hello,

I had my midwife appointment today and discussed my family history. This is my first pregnancy and have had no previous complications. However, my mum and auntie both had severe pre eclampsia which led to very premature babies. I have therefore been put on high risk and prescribed low dosage asprin to take everyday. Has anyone else experienced this or had asprin during previous pregnancies. Should I been concerned?

  • Pre e and eclampsia is very serious I would suggest you talk more to your doctor about it we cannot tell you the chance of it happening to you.

  • Bleh, I was wondering this too. My mom had preeclampsia with my sister, but not me or my other sister. Did your mom have preeclampsia with you or a sibling?

If your practitioner is concerned, you have a higher than average risk of developing it and that's what matters. It still doesn't mean that you are likely to get it, just more than most. Preeclampsia isn't really a huge deal as long as it's caught early, and that's why they want to monitor you closely.

  • Sorry, my question was around taking the asprin. I'm obviously concerned about pre eclampsia but wasn't expecting to have to take asprin everyday
  • @FiancB ...she had it worse with my eldest brother but had it with three out of four pregnancies
  • I think it's pretty common for aspirin to be prescribed in this instance. Aspirin is generally to be avoided in pregnancy, partly for risk for bleeding, but in this case that is an effect you want- thinned blood. The benefits outweigh the risks. It's one of those drugs that ideally you don't take, but it isn't so bad and in cases like yours is beneficial.

  • I guess I'm just surprised they'll already treating you as high risk. I went into my last pregnancy with high blood pressure, ended up with pre-e and still am not automatically considered high risk.
  • @laurenash23 .... I'm in the UK which may make a difference but I was shocked as well
  • I am high risk for pre e but have never been prescribed asprin. I had my first prenatal exam last week and was told to meet with the high risk doc asap. I go in on the 30th for my u/s, genetic counseling and to meet with a nutritionist.
  • I'm on daily aspirin too, not for pre-e risk but to prevent mc due to a possible anti-coagulant issue. From what my doc said, it's a very low-risk treatment for potential issues. I'll be on it my whole pregnancy. Considering that many women are on prescription blood thinner injections for autoimmune disorders throughout pregnancy, aspirin doesn't concern me.

  • @Reasons2Smile ...maybe the UK is different? I'm not sure but I've googled it and it's quite common that they prescribe it.

@winnie1122 That's good to know, It seems like the tiny risk is really worth it.
  • My OB also had me start on baby aspirin, there is a recent study that has come out that it decreases the risk of preeclampsia and pregnancy associated hypertension. I had crazy out of control BP with my first so I'm hopeful it helps this time!
  • I take Lovonox ( not for a risk of pre e...) It is an injectable blood thinner. There are other high-risk bumpies on here.

If use the search function, and search under all, you should be able to find a lot of things. There actually are a ton of things, here are a couple of links.
