Issues at NT scan

Hi everyone,

I have had issues with my NT scan and I am just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I went in for my NT scan at 12w1d and the ultrasound technician could not get the measurement - she asked me to re book in a few days. I went in again yesterday at 12w5d and the technician tried both a abdominal and internal ultrasound - again she could not get the measurements she needed.

Now I am not sure what to do next - has anyone else experienced something similar? Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Issues at NT scan

  • Did she explain to you why she couldn't get the measurements? Was it just that baby's position wasn't right? Maybe just rebook and ask for a more experienced tech?

  • I had my NT scan on Monday. The tech could not get a good reading. The baby would not move it's head at all or cooperate. The tech really tired both vaginally and abdominally.  There isn't time for me to rebook so they recommended to get the blood work done which I haven't decided about yet!  They were able to give us a good guess on the sex of the baby. I was surprised they could do that so early!

  • The technician just said she couldn't get the measurements and the baby wasn't cooperating - I just find it odd that they couldn't get it on two separate days and trying both types of ultrasound - this is my first pregnancy and I'm probably worriying too much - I was just wanting the peace of mind that comes with the test results
  • What was baby's position on the screen while you were watching? The tech was laughing hysterically because my kid (which didn't surprise me, they're clearly going to be weird like their father ;)) was literally face down spine up, like lying as flat as possible in the face down position, couldn't even see a profile. She pushed down to get he or she to move and the baby would just lift his or her butt up in the air. Even though my kid acted like a freak she was able to get absolutely everything that she needed. If baby was back down like usual I would see no problem with the tech being able to get accurate measurements. Like PP have said, I'd definitely ask for a different more experienced tech.
  • Are you as far along as you think you are? Like did you have a dating u/s before? Maybe it was just the position she should had at least explained why they couldn't get clear measurements!
  • The doctor had a rough time with mine since the baby was litterally jumping all over the place and wouldn't sit still long enough for any good pics to be taken.
  • Yes I had a dating ultrasound done and am in the right time frame for the tests. I called my doctor and am going to ask for another ultrasound done at a different location. It is definitely frustrating not having all of the information - I have read other places that women have been asked to get up and try to walk around to get the baby in a different position - I was asked to cough and that was it! Hopefully tomorrow I will get some answers from my doctor!
  • We had a hard time getting our little one to cooperate. We tried for an hour straight. They then told me to run a couple errands, eat and come back. It only took another half hour and we got the measurements we needed.
  • Thanks for the replies everyone - it makes me feel better knowing others had similar issues. My doctor is sending me to a major hospital in Toronto to have another test done - she said they are the best so hopefully they can give me some answers! Now I just have to wait ...
