AW: Counting Blessings (Oliver's First Week)

I've been touch and go here for the past two weeks, lurking & watching as more beautiful babies have been brought into the world. Congratulations momma's. They are BEAUTIFUL.

We've been on quite the wild ride the past two weeks.

As I put on our birth story, Oliver came into the world via RCS Thursday, 11/5 at 1:39 p.m. He was 9 lbs 4 oz and 22 inches long. He had to have his lungs drained due to swallowing amniotic fluid as he was delivered and we were told he has a slight heart murmur (common). I was in the recovery room longer than usual due to near hemorrhaging, had to have quite a bit of pitocin but they were able to stop it.

Later that night we noticed he was breathing fast and harder than usual and was fussy with some spittle on his lips, they pumped 5 ml of amniotic fluid from his little stomach. They eventually took him to the nursery because his breathing didn't improve. They put him on oxygen and monitors to try to figure out what was going on, it turned out he had pneumonia. They started an I.V. of antibiotics, put him on a CPAP, and had to put a feeding tube in. We were also told he was jaundiced and had to do a light treatment. Saturday we were able to hold him again for the first time since Thursday night.

We were woken Sunday to be told he also has SVT. (A faster than normal heart rate beginning above the heart's two lower chambers.) His heart rate was 230+ for about 10 minutes but they were able to shock his system by putting ice on his forehead. (The medicine that would have had to be used would temporarily stop his heart then restart it.) They then did an echo to make sure all was okay with his heart, only to find he has ASD (A birth defect that causes a hold in the wall between the heart's upper chambers.) However, the ASD is lower than usual and is causing the right side of his heart to bulge.

Come Monday he was able to come off of the CPAP machine and was able to get his feeding tube out. The only thing he was connected to was the I.V. for his antibiotics. (His poor skin is so sensitive the tape wrecked utter havoc on his skin.) He was able to come to my room later that night and stay with me there instead of the nursery, they even brought in the bilirubin lights for more treatments and he never had to leave my side.

Other happenings on Monday:
-I was discharged, but the hospital kept me as a 'boarder mom'. They let me and my husband/mom stay free of charge and gave us free meals so we wouldn't be separated from Oliver. They are amazing.

-Monday afternoon we received a phone call from my MIL that my SIL was arrested for heavy drugs and buying things to manufacture it. CPS deemed that our 6 year old nephew was unable to stay in the home (My MIL's) and his father was unable to provide a home for him. We became relative care takers then and there. My husband had to rush there to meet DCS and pick our nephew up. He had to take both our nephew and daughter to the hospital to be tested for exposure and luckily both children were safe and healthy. My husband spent the rest of the week at home with our daughter and our nephew, driving to the hospital while they were in school to see Oliver & I.

Throughout the rest of the week, Oliver had to have a couple more light treatments. Wednesday he had a procedure done and we thought all was okay. But then they came back and told us they couldn't stop him from bleeding. He bled for 5+ hours, even with the best non-invasive measures taken. Finally, a stitch later and it stopped. They did blood tests and a couple things came back elevated. We have to go to a blood disorder specialist in a couple weeks for more testing to find out what's going on.

We were finally able to come home a full week after he was born on 11/12, Oliver lost his 10% and only weighed 8 lbs 5 oz when discharged. We had an adjusting weekend. We started the previous week as a family of three and when we came home, a family of five.

This past Monday we went to his pediatrician and he had gained 5 oz. in 3 days. He's doing really well, the pediatric cardiologists said he is a-okay with everything and they see no need to see him anytime soon. (We just have to monitor his heart rate, especially if he's fussy. So we always have a stethoscope in the diaper bag.) He's healing well and back to being a "normal" baby.

We've been rushing around this week dealing with CPS/DCS to make things finalized.

Our nephew is adjusting well, his health is so much better and he's in a safer and better home.
Our daughter is over the moon with her little brother and she's excited that she now has her cousin here to stay.

We've been through the ringer. Especially our boys.
But we are so blessed, we are home as a family. A full, complete family. It may be crazy and hectic, but we know our children, all three of them are loved and safe and are right where they need to be.

Re: AW: Counting Blessings (Oliver's First Week)

  • Wow! You guys are amazing to take your nephew in at this time - he's so lucky to have you.
So glad to hear that Oliver is doing well and that your family is all under one roof. Ts&Ps for his continued health.
  • What a crazy ride! So glad that Oliver is doing well and home, and so wonderful that you were there to take in your nephew. Foster care is so hard on children, and it's so great he has family to love him and care for him.

  • Congratulations. What a time for you :-( you've done so well x
  • My husband had a VSD when he was born (similar to ASD, just the ventricle instead of artery). I know medicine has come a long way since he had it, but he never had a problem with it after he had surgery to correct it (I don't think they even need to do true surgery to fix it anymore).

You and your husband are amazing for all the care you're giving and allowing your family to grow so much at such a crazy time! Prayers for smooth transitions and a sane home!
  • Bless your heart. I'm glad things are looking good for Oliver and he got to come home.
