Success after IF

Success after unexplained infertility

Hi all-

I had my first RE appointment today. He and I went over my chart (that was sent over from my OB/GYN) and discussed the testing that myself and my DH have gone through so far (HSG was normal, SA normal, BBT and ovi sticks showing ovulation is occurring, and he didn't see any red flags from hormone testing). He also performed an ultrasound on me and saw good uterine lining and a nice folli maturing in the left ovary (CD8). He told use that we are a classic case of unexplained infertility and suggested I start with Clomid next month. My question out there for you all is have any of you been in the same boat with this sort of unexplained infertility and either gotten pregnant after that diagnosis or been on Clomid for it and have gotten pregnant. I'm not super optimistic at this point since I seem to be Oing on my own but would love to hear some stories of similar situations.

Thanks!

Re: Success after unexplained infertility

  • I've never been on this board (not sure I qualify, I think i do, or if my siggy is ok!), but yes, I have some good friends who had a history like yours who did IVF and got their daughter on their first cycle. They had done many IUIs but first round worked with IVF. They tried for 6 years with no luck with no reason.

  • Hi there! I am so sorry you are dealing with IF. It just sucks. Our dx was unexplained IF. We did three rounds of Clomid and three rounds of three injectable IUIs - all BFNs. Our first IVF was a BFP, but I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks. Our second IVF brought us a son who is now almost 5. When we were ready to TTC again we started with a FET. We were cancelled a few times, but the first time we made it to transfer it was a BFP. We had our twin daughters as a result of that cycle. They are two and a half now. This summer, I discovered that I was pregnant again without medical intervention. We weren't even trying. It seems so crazy after everything we have been through, but baby #4 is due in March. It was a long, hard road, but I would say we have been very successful in building our family. :) Wishing you nothing but the best on your journey.

  • Hi @Dragonfly1226 thanks for the kind words! You sure have gone through quite the journey. I'm trying to stay as optimistic as possible and I am truly blessed that there is nothing wrong with me (at least that they can find through testing). I've started my first cycle of Clomid and am hoping I get a nice early Christmas BFP. That would be the best gift possible :)

  • Hi there! Unexplained infertility is frustrating for sure but there can be a light at the end of the tunnel. My husband and I started trying about 2 and a half years ago (both 29 years old at the time). After I went off the pill, I didn't get a period for 3 months (you can imagine the number of HPT we took). Saw my OB and started tests right away... Ultrasounds, hormones, other tests I can't even remember... Nothing wrong. Eventually I got my period and we started trying again. After about a year, my husband's sperm was checked and I had an HSG, again no problems. We saw an RE in January of this year. Tried timed intercourse for 2 cycles, then 3 Clomid cycles... all BFNs. we decided to take an IF month off in June. Right as we were about to start IF treatment again, we discovered I needed surgery for a C-word scare. Thankfully, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease instead! Started back up with IF treatment in the Fall. My RE suggested we skip IUI all together and instead start IVF (since my cycles tend to be long some months and I don't always ovulate... which apparently still qualifies as unexplained IF).

Anywho, I had day 5, fresh, single embryo transfer in early November... and now I'm 10 weeks pregnant :)

I wish you so much luck on your IF journey! Remember there are LOTS of us out there that can relate and are here for you! I was so nervous to go through IF and each step of the process seemed scarier and scarier. Looking back now, I am grateful for all of it and cannot wait til July when our little nugget is born!
  • I hope you wound up with your Christmas miracle, but if not, I have come to give you another success story. I have unexplained infertility but my RE doesn't really believe in "unexplained" so he classified me as unexplained with suspected ovulatory dysfunction. I did 2 round of Clomid with my OB unmonitored. I swear I felt myself O from both sides one of those months (O was confirmed with temp). But, neither of those took and I started seeing an RE. My RE monitored a natural cycle due to timing of my first appt, and I actually had 2 mature follicles naturally. The next cycle, he bumped me to Clomid 100mg, and I only had one and it thinned my lining. For some reason, that is why my RE suspected I have an ovulatory dysfunction, but it still doesn't really make sense to me. I then moved on to injectables and got my BFP on my third attempt. Unexplained is such a difficult and double-edged sword. It's great there is nothing "wrong" but it just feels like your grasping at straws. It's also difficult not know why it isn't working.

Best of luck to you, and there is hope!!

  • Thank you @mechelita44 and @riveridgional for your comments! I got the best possible Christmas present this year; a BFP! My RE put me on 50mg of Clomid on the cycle I got my positive result. Words cannot explain how happy I am. I honestly didn't think the Clomid would work because I was already ovulating on my own. It really did help give me a "super ovulation" though. I go in for my first US with my RE next Monday which will be 6w3d. Crossing my fingers that everything looks good and is progressing well. I have to keep pinching myself because I don't feel like this is really happening. I can't wait for Monday :)

I have unexplained infertility, as well. Test results for DH and I didn't show any red flags. We had been trying on our own for a year before the diagnosis and after, we started a round of Clomid+IUI. The first two rounds resulted in a BFN. Then we had to take a break for a couple of months because I had a cyst on one of my ovaries. Our third round, I got a BFP. This is where we figured out that I am a late ovulator because I asked my RE to push back our insemination date one day so that DH did not have to take a day off the day before he went on vacation. At first, she was hesitant but she eventually agreed and I got pregnant. Unfortunately, I had a miscarriage at 8 weeks. I had a D&C and had to wait a couple of months before we could start another round of Clomid+IUI. Our 4th round ended in a BFN. We did our 5th round last month (December), RE scheduled the IUI for the same cycle day as the time I got pregnant and I got a BFP on 12/30/15. Beta was done yesterday and results confirmed pregnancy. Have to go in for the second beta to see if my hcg numbers are doubling so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can make it to the finish line this time.

  • Hi @riveridgional! Just got back from the RE and my first u/s. Everything is looking great so far! Based off the size, they are estimating my EDD to be 8/28/16 which makes me 6w1d today. I also got to hear the heartbeat. Coolest thing ever...I feel so unbelievably blessed that i got to experience that ! It was at 126 bpm which the nurse said was a strong number. :)
