Whey Protein?

Does anyone else drink protein shakes? Curious if anyone has suggestions on a particular whey protein they use while pregnant. I have been finding it difficult to get in enough food in general throughout this first trimester with my lack of appetite. Protein in particular. I talked to my doctor at my appointment on Monday and asked if it was safe to drink protein shakes to supplement my other protein intake. She wasn't concerned at all, as long as I knew what most of the ingredients were, but she didn't give me any specific suggestions.

Tonight I picked up a whey protein that I would normally get. No preservatives, low in sugar, includes amino acids and a few other things, but nothing that would be harmful.

Suggestions or input?

Re: Whey Protein?

  • I have been drinking ideal shape but only because it's what I already had on hand. I was using it for weight loss prior to BFP. It's one of the few things I can have in the am that doesn't make me feel awful. I have a friend who is 38weeks and has been doing shakeology from day one and her doc was totally on board. I just can't stomach the cost!

  • @fishwife799 H's cousin sells shakeology and it's not bad, but there's no way in hell I could justify paying that every month with both H and I drinking it! The stuff I use now is a reasonably priced one made by BodyTech. I can get a 5 pound tub for $45 and it'll last me over a month.
  • I love bolthouse shakes and Costco has really great protein shakes that only have 1g of sugar, but still taste great.

  • I've been thinking about this too. I wish I could afford shakeology.

Some days it's so hard to get protein in, meats for the most part have been pretty repulsive to me.
  • @mrsschmity, we had this convo at the very beginning of the board, I'll try and search, I'm obsessed with my whey protein shake but I stopped as there wasn't enough research and I'm blanking on the mom who told me but she said it could cause vitamin B deficiency in baby. And the all vegan ones were worse. Let me go look, it was in a fit mamas thread ...

  • I've been drinking the, Optimum Nutrition. Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein, chocolate flavor. I drink a shake every morning for breakfast because I'm not a big breakfast person. I do a little bit of water, One scoop of protein, A half of a banana, and a teaspoon of organic peanut butter. It tastes awesome!
  • Ugh I can't find it, then searched and a million conflicting answers pop up. It was a deficiency in vitamin A, not B. What about making your own protein shakes with Greek yogurt, pb, cocoa powder...

@Wyattnash00 I do make my own shakes usually, but there's just not enough protein in them with the Greek yogurt. I'm looking for something a bit more substantial. I would think taking a prenatal would rule out anything related to vitamin/nutrient deficiencies?

ETA: From what I've read, vitamin A deficiencies are only a concern if you're eating a high protein, low fat diet.
  • I have no idea @mrsschmity! Google scares the sh$! Out of me so I stopped researching protein powders, I think if they have few, natural ingredients you're good. I know a lack of vitamin A causes heart deformalities, and my DS has a small hole in his heart. My hubs told me this has zero to do with protein powder...and I know he's right, but I'm being extra cautious.

  • My doctor said she didn't know enough about Shakeology to approve it, and with a quick glance of the ingredients said no way. I was a Beachbody coach so this broke my heart. I know other doctors have given it two thumbs up, so it can't be that bad. It was the most amazing thing for my body when I did drink it every day. I haven't drank it while pregnant, but will also bring it to my OB tomorrow for a second opinion.

Second to Shakeology, I would recommend going to a Vegan blend. They have the highest standards in terms of what they can shove into it, and they are packed with protein... Because... Well vegans drink it. :-)

    What's your favorite blend?

  • I use an unsweetened, unflavoured whey protein isolate. I mix it with fruit and almond milk (regular milk would be fine, but I'm lactose intolerant) so it's not disgusting as I imagine it would be completely vile on its own.
  • Ladies, just a word of warning, both excess Vitamin A and Vitamin A deficiency can cause birth defects. I wouldn't recommend taking any supplements with Vitamin A (it is usually not present in prenatal). Natural food sources are best. Carrots (high in vitamin A), milk, tomatoes are a few.
  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies.

Atlast111 Thank you for the input. There is no vitamin A in the protein I bought, and my prenatal has a minimal amount. Most, if not all, of my vitamin A comes from food.

From all the science-based research articles I've read, and the feedback from my doctor, a good quality whey protein is fine during pregnancy with an overall balanced diet.

I was responding to Wyattnash00's comment about Vitamin A in general. I wasn't referring to your shake! I was simply explaining the dangers of vitamin A as this is the only scary vitamin that causes serious deformities. If you found a good shake already then you seem to have got everything sorted anyway.

Apologies, if I misinterpreted your comment. It's very difficult to gauge tone online! I thought you were being defensive and implying my advice was unwelcome as previously we have had differing opinions. That was obviously not your intention so sorry!
  • I heard you shouldn't drink protein shakes with artificial protein while preg. :/
