What's your doc like???

Hi ladies! New to the group and new to alllll this baby stuff!!
I've been reading the threads and feel like my dr experience is way different then many of you guys so just curious what others' experiences are and if they like their doc!
I had a pre-conception appt where I went to meet the doc, did a pap, talked genetics and family history.
When we had a pos pregnancy test they booked me an appt right away! Took blood and urine and answered any questions.
Next appt was @ 8 weeks and we had a sonogram -  and heard a heart beat! And my second sono and nuchal test is at 12 weeks. I'm at 10w5d now.
The doc doesnt update me on hormone levels or other things I see mommas talking about on here -- seems to be taking an 'I'll call you if something is wrong' approach.
In the meantime, suspense is killing me! 2 more weeks!

How are things going for you?! Excited to be here!

Re: What's your doc like???

  • My doc is the same way, super laid back.

She keeps my calm! I'm a FTM and a nurse so I am always worried- having a laid back doctor is key in my opinion.

  • My Dr is really laid back but the Dr that was on call to deliver my first two babies was a little more hardcore, serious, no-nonsense, down to business - as were the nurses.  It actually worked really well to have that personality in the moment of labor for me because I knew they wouldn't take any BS from me and they were solid cheerleaders.  I think I'd be more apt to whine if I knew I had an audience.  But it also worked great to have my more chill, granola Dr for my appointments.  We will see if she will be on call this time around!
  • My dr is definitely more laid back - she's been by OBGYN since I was 14 so we just know eachother really well by now (and this is my 3rd pregnancy), but she is definitely calming and reassuring and tries to keep me focused on me and the baby, not a bunch of numbers!
  • My practice has 4 doctors, but I see two more than the others.  The two are both men and pretty laid back.  They handle my uptight stressy question-filled appointments very well.  One of them is a crazy magician with the doppler and gets the heart beat immediately every time.  We joke that he is magic.  The other will usually small talk me with funny stories while finding it, which is nice to ease some of the "GOOD GOSH IT'S NOT ALIVE" panics.  They are a VERY good match for me.  They keep me sane.

  • My doc is just like that. I'd never heard of HCG (HGC?) Levels until I joined the bump with my 3rd pregnancy.
  • Same! My doc took blood on my first visit and was like, "I'll call you in a couple hours and let you know if your levels are good." Uhhhh ok! Cool! Better not to worry about rando numbers I can't do anything about and try to stay healthy I guess.

Those panics are the only thing keeping me from getting one of those at home scanner things. I literally cannot stop thinking about it and am counting the days until my 12 week appointment.

My doctor hates the at home dopplers.  He thinks they do more harm than good.  Most times, if a mom cannot find the heartbeat, it's there.  And if there is something wrong with the heartbeat, most moms have no idea what that sounds like, so they cannot know it's wrong.  He thinks they are not a good idea.

  • My doc is very laid back and doesn't stress much over anything. I get an u/s every visit which I love. She also delivered my other 3 babies so that's awesome.
She just happened to be the doc on call when I went into labor with my DD and the doc before her was trying to threaten c/s just because I was laboring a long time, nothing was wrong with the baby. Luckily she came on call and was so much better, I was able to labor longer and have had all 3 babies vaginally thanks to her.

  • My doctor is angel! I've had two miscarriages in the last 12 months and I'm a FTM. I've seen her 3 times for this pregnancy and had an US each time. One visit was because i hadnt had symptoms for a few days, freaked out and she took me immediately that day. my next appt is next Tuesday for NT scan but I'll be seeing someone else. She has always been very reassuring and comforting through my losses. She actually went on maternity leave right after my second loss. Hubby and I planned a trip to Australia so we waited til the trip to try agin. Got pregnant on the trip and my first time seeing the doctor was also her first week back from leave. Meant to be!
  • Mine is a total jerk. He's condescending and pushy and doesn't like that I have my own opinions about stuff. I am currently in the process of looking for a new one. :(
  • My dr is super laid back. It was to the point I didn't always trust her with DS, but looking back, she was always right. She's very honest and up front which works for me and she doesn't put me on bedrest for any tiny thing like the midwives at my practice do.

  • I love my OB. He's all business but very calming, comforting and laid back. He was extremely supportive during my labor with DS but put his foot down when it was necessary.

Most (not all) of the women that have their hormone levels frequently tested and multiple US's have either experienced multiple losses or were doing fertility treatments.

  • I had to find another one. The one that delivered my son moved to Florida. I absolutely loved her!! She was no nonsense, but definitely made sure you didn't have any questions. She knew that I would need a c-section, but allowed me to try and push for our agreed compromised time. .. I needed to try. I totally respected that! Of course if there was something wrong with my baby she wouldn't have. And I would have understood. I hope this new OB is similar. He seems very nice. I just had one visit with him so far. I'll see him again Tuesday. He needs to look over my files and then he said that he would be on board with a VBAC. Because my son was just tummy side up, there's no reason why he wouldn't help me with a VBAC.
  • Mine is super brutally honest, which during the summer with my miscarriage was SO helpful to me! (My husband had other thoughts...) I found her blunt demeanor so helpful, but she was also extremely supportive and explained every little sad and gory detail which I appreciated. I think because of that, I got through it a stronger person for this pregnancy!

I actually was supposed to switch to his insurance since it's a bit better than mine, but that meant I would have had to switch OBs... So I'm sticking with mine for now since I love her so so much! My first appointment is today! :)

UGH!!! If you live in NYC I'm loving mine so far.
  • I had to switch to a new practice for this pregnancy since my dr from first pregnancy stopped delivering. I'm actually relieved because the NP in his practice made my blood pressure skyrocket every time I saw her. I was gaining weight a little fast and she would ask me everything I was eating and pick it apart, not cool. I've only seen my new dr once but I'm already in love with her, very positive and encouraging so far. Since I'm having a repeat CS she will even sew my ab muscles back together while she's in there (saving me a separate diastasis recti repair surgery!).
  • With my first two pregnancies I used an OB practice with a group of doctors and it was just ok. I only really liked one of the doctors though. This time I'm in a different state and my OB is just one guy and he's a really well known public figure. It's kinda weird. But he's got a very strong energetic positive personality and we really like him so far.
  • Mine is hilarious and a total ball buster. He's pretty laid back overall, but if something concerns him he definitely follows up and takes it seriously. The only thing I'm hoping is that he doesn't use my size (I'm very tiny) as the only reason for a RCS. We will have to discuss it. However he and his staff are wonderful!

  • The OB I used for my first pregnancy moved and my insurance changed. I have Kaiser now. I met one of the midwives during my first appointment and I will be meeting my OB at the next one. An acquaintance recommended her and said she was very sweet and didn't rush through appointments. If I don't like her, there are 4 others I could switch to. The midwife was awesome.
