Baby crying, pulling off breast

I believe I may have a fast let down. When my baby eats he gulps fast and sometimes coughs or chokes. He seems to be fine until around 8. When I try to feed him he cries and pushes away from me, but seems to want to feed. When I get him latched he eats for a second then pulls off and cries. Is my supply lower at night and he is just used to more milk during the day? My breasts do feel soft, but when I express there is milk. Should I give him a bottle during this time? I feel so bad and don't know what to do. We have had two check ups and he gained almost a pound in a week.

Re: Baby crying, pulling off breast

  • I have the same problem with dd. Her worst times are right before she goes down for the night and her early morning feeding, usually around 4 am. I just keep latching her on until she's had about 8-10 minutes, which is how much she usually does. It seems she cries during feedings when she's overly tired.
Imo, as long as she's having eb9wet diapers she's getting enough. No need to supplement.

  • He definately has enough dirty diapers. It's as if he wants to eat, but when he does, he doesn't want it and just gets p*ssed off. I'm just getting frustrated and he is too. I also think he wants to comfort nurse sometimes and gets mad when milk comes out, but he won't take a pacifier. I hope this passes soon. :(
  • I read that our milk supply is lowest at night because it's a fussy time so they like to suckle to comfort themselves. When mine dined what yours is doing I change his diaper and let him cry. Once good and mad he latches on and eats well.
Every baby is different so keep trying things till something works. Good luck.
  • I had this happen too, I pumped a bit off and baby latched and ate fine. I can't say your problem is the same but mine was definitely a fast letdown!
  • My baby does this at night, and it's because he's overly tired. My letdown is very fast as well, so I hear the loud, quick gulps whenever he nurses. My husband and I have thankfully gotten LO on an awesome schedule where he sleeps almost all night (typically wakes up once but has slept through the night a few times at five weeks - knock on wood!) and as a result I've noticed he doesn't sleep much during the day. Totally not complaining, but I have also noticed this makes him SUPER tired at night. He gets to a point where he doesn't even know what he wants, but if I have him swaddled and rock him in our bedroom with all lights off except the TV he goes right to sleep with his binky. I would try taking LO off the breast and just trying to comfort until he falls asleep. Sometimes if you try too hard to keep giving it to him it will just irritate him further and make it harder to calm him down.
  • Mine does that too because I have an overactive letdown and she can't swallow fast enough so I usually dry myself off so she can latch easier then lean back in bed and have her lay on top of me to slow my flow a little bit and hold her head in place until she relaxes which is pretty quick.. If she's still fussy I try to pump for a few minutes while my husband calms her and then get her to try again and we have an easier time :)
  • Thank you all for your replies. I will try out some of your tips tomorrow. :)
