No more appointments until 16 weeks?

I had my first appointment with my midwife this morning. Love her! She did an ultrasound and measured baby at just over 7 weeks. (I should be further along, so we are going to re-do it next week just to confirm.) But what's really odd to me is that she said my next routine appointment is at 16 weeks! Whaaaat?! With my first, I had monthly appointments at the beginning. It just seems really weird to not have another routine appointment until the middle of January... Is this normal?

In other news, I might end up switching to the July board after this next ultrasound. If the measurement today was correct, my new EDD is July 4.

Re: No more appointments until 16 weeks?

  • My OB does every 4 weeks until 28 weeks, then every 2 weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly until the baby is born.

Going from 7 to 16 seems a little strange, at least from what I am used to!

    Same here... I have appointments at 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40 weeks.  I think 9 weeks apart is a little far apart, but that may just be me.

  • Ask about it, maybe it was an oversight?
Your BP, weight and urine should still be checked every 4 weeks.

  • I think it depends on the midwife. With my 2nd and 3rd pregnancy I saw midwife at first appt and then not again till 20 weeks. I was always able to call/make an appt if I needed to or had a question.
  • That does seem like a big gap. I had an apt today (i am 10w 3d) and i have an apt next Tue to discuss what prenatal testing i want to do, and then another regular apt on dec 9th. Talk to the midwife when you see her next week.

  • They should offer you the trisomy screenings between 12 and 13 weeks. I'd call back and double check. Can't hurt.
  • Keep in mind, midwife care is different from OB care.  Just a thought, I'm not too familiar but I know timing could be different.

  • Although the care is different you can still request anther appt if you want. Not much happens at this stage of pregnancy which is why they most likely just have your next appt at 16 weeks. I had the choice to come in every 4 weeks or just wait till 20 weeks. This is my 5th pregnancy (4th viable) so I was ok waiting.
  • Hmm. Alrighty. I declined genetic testing this time around so that's probably why I wasn't offered another appointment until 16 weeks.
