Breast/bottle feeding

Just curious, did any of you ladies that are breastfeeding introduce bottle to baby before the recommended 4 weeks ? And if so did your LO prefer bottle over breast or get nipple confusion? I'm EBF on demand currently but would love for DH to help with feeds at night. We're 2 1/2 weeks along and he nurses great ! Problem is I'm exhausted . Any tips or advice appreciated !:)

Re: Breast/bottle feeding

  • We haven't had any problems. She's had a pacifier since we were in the hospital and we've been bottle feeding since week 2. She still prefers the breast over anything else.

  • My little girl is almost three weeks. I'm EBF and we introduced a bottle when she was two weeks old exactly. No nipple confusion and she still latches perfectly. :) I say just go for it, that's what we did. No expectations, our LO just loves to eat so bottle or breast and she's happy lol
  • My son is 3.5 weeks and we introduced a bottle at 5 days and a pacifier at one day. We haven't had any nipple confusion or refusal of the breast. He actually prefers breast to bottle
  • We introduced a bottle at 3 weeks. I've only used the "Latch" bottles so far, but he took it with no issues. He doesnt seem to care what his food is coming out of. We give him one bottle a day for my wife to bond with him.
  • Yay! Awesome thanks !!
  • I introduce the bottle at 3 weeks, and she has had two so far. We had no problems with her continuing to nurse well.
  • We had to introduce a bottle at 4 days old. We had to supplement with formula for a couple of days and he has had no issues as long as he gets fed lol I also gave him a pacifier a couple of days later.
  • We introduced a bottle at 2 weeks, and he is doing great. We have been taking turns, going back and forth with bottle & breast!
  • My baby (9 weeks old) hates pacifiers and bottles. Getting her to take a bottle is tough (we have tried 4 different ones). And if I'm in the house then forget it! She knows I'm around and can give her the real thing. Hope it works out for you!!!
  • Our pediatrician told us 2 weeks since she was taking to breastfeeding so well. We did it a few days after 2 weeks and a couple of times a week since. We even had one time where I didn't have enough in the bottle for SO to feed her and she took the breast immediately after the bottle.
  • We are using bottles to supplement. If you're concerned, get Dr Browns premie bottles. They have them at target. They have the slowest drip of any bottle and the baby still has to work for the milk. Outer guy drinks from them and still loves my breast, even though I'm hardly giving him any milk.
  • Our first night home DD was getting soo hungry/angry because I don't think my colostrum was filling her up since my milk hadn't come in yet, so we fed her a bottle. She didn't get any nipple confusion, And breastfed just fine after that and we've continued to have bottles every once in a while and she never gets confused.
  • We do both bottle and breast and formula and breastmilk and have since day one. I don't produce enough to EBF. At most feedings we nurse for however long he wants and then give him a bottle of formula. Our guy isn't picky, breast, bottle, formula, breastmilk- whatever. He just likes eating. He doesn't care what kind of bottle either.

We had to supplement at the beginning and he kept "forgetting" how to latch on the bottle and breast intermittently, it would take a few frustrated minutes. We tried Dr. Brown's, and Life Factory bottles and Tommy Tippee we had the best success with. He still gets bottles of pumped milk occasionally and it takes him a minute to latch, but he definitely has always preferred a boob. He also refuses to take a pacifier so maybe mine is just really picky.
  • We introduced at 1.5 weeks- it was about survival, I had to get out of the house. Since then he's had countless bottles but still prefers being at the breast. He will also take a paci on a good day :) we haven't had any issues. That said we bf on demand so he spends a lot of time at the breast

  • We had to use a bottle her first few days to supplement due to jaundice and she does great BF! She has also loved a paci from her first week. My advice about introducing bottle is to teach your SO to burp every 30 ml or so and again at the end!
  • Our pediatrician actually recommended giving a bottle occasionally around 2-3 weeks.  DD got one right at 3 weeks and we had no problems with nipple confusion.  Every baby is different though.  You can always try it and if you have problems wait another week or so before trying again.
  • We do a bottle of pumped milk per day, usually in the morning or night so my husband can feed her too. We started at 3 weeks with regular level 1 dr. Browns bottles, and have had no issues at all going back and forth, even during the same feeding if the bottle isn't enough.
  • We introduced a bottle on day 2. Our boy was so fussy and wouldn't sleep off the get go. We continued to breast feed and supplement with a bottle through the first week. By the start of the following week we were close to EBF but still did the odd bottle (our boy took a turn for the better and is now so happy!). DS is now 3 weeks and I have been pumping a few oz per day so daddy can feed him at night or we have a bottle to use if we go out. We still occasionally top him off with formula, he hit a growth spurt and after about 3 solid hours of feeding this momma needed a break! It takes him a bit to latch onto the bottle but we haven't had any nipple confusion at all. I'm really happy we got him used to both, it's will be nice to be able to head to the grocery store alone and leave dad with a bottle (haven't brought myself to leave him yet though!)
