Choking on acid reflux

I shot up out of bed last night totally choking on acid reflux. It was the scariest thing! I've had really bad heartburn and acid indigestion during the second and third trimesters of this pregnancy. I thought maybe the baby had moved and my heartburn was improving during the last week or so, but then I was so rudely awakened last night gasping for air! My husband said I was gasping and coughing until I went into the bathroom to try to spit up the burning acid that was killing my throat. And the taste was horrible! I took two tums - I've been popping them like candy - I don't even know at this point if they help. Has anyone else experienced acid reflux this bad? What did you do? I always sleep propped up and I try not to eat or drink anything but water two hours before bed, but sometimes I get hungry. I've been holding out on taking Zantac because of the potential dangers although my doctor says it is safe for baby. I know I only have about 6 weeks to go, but I'm so exhausted. I can't ever rest anymore with this. Is it December yet? :/

Re: Choking on acid reflux

  • I've had this issue big time. Though I finally caved to the Zantac after making it into the third tri and it's like a whole new life. My throat was so irritated from the acid that I would occasionally lose my voice throughout the day and even my ears were inflamed from it irritating my sinuses.

  • We've had a ton of posts on acid reflux. Many of us are experiencing horrible reflux. I take a pepcid ac in the mid morning and before dinner. It literally cures it for the rest of the night. Tums definitely did nothing for me.

Tums by the bed and Zantac along with prenatal before going to sleep.

It's super scary the first time it happens. Another joy of pregnancy we never hear about until it happens a to us.
  • I would also avoid water too close to bedtime if you can help it. Water makes my acid reflux worse.

  • Yep, woke up gasping for air the another night and almost puked. Not fun. I forgot my Zantac that night and ate a dinner a tad too spicy. Won't do that again. Reflux has been my #1 worst pregnancy symptom thus far.

  • Yes I've had this happen, and it just seems to be getting worse. I tried apple cider vinegar- hoping to avoid taking yet another medication while pregnant, but unfortunately that only made it much, much worse. At this point (36+2) Tums do nothing and Zantac is barely keeping it manageable.
  • Suck on ice chips when you have the sudden reflux. I know people.say to avoid drinking water, but sometimes ice cold water is all that helps me. You can try a glass or milk or yogurt (if you can tolerate it...I can't). The cream will neutralize it like it does with spicy foods. I also avoid almost anything eithndalt or spices of any sort for dinner. Super bland food is all I can eat without puking bc of reflux. I had a stomach bug this weekend and my acid was so bad that it fried my sinuses. I've taken zantac for years bc if I don't I get infections from my reflux in my nose. Nasty, but it happens. Cheese is what I eat when it really gets bad. A thing of string cheese is helpful bc it is fairly mild in flavor.
  • This happens to me almost every night. I wake up with reflux/vomit, (sorry, I know it's gross), in the back of my throat and go running for the bathroom. I am taking zantac 2x a day already, and like you, I sleep propped up, don't eat 2 hours before bed, watch what I am eating, and everything else they tell you do to. Nothing really helps. There is no room left for my stomach with all that baby in there, and until that baby drops I don't think there is anything to be done about it.
  • Tums stopped working for me months ago. I take Zantac 150 once a day just about everyday and my baby is healthy. I too sleep propped up and I too have awaken with the panicked choking / coughing. It's not easy getting to the standing position. It's scary but hang in there. Given in to Zantac 150 it works!!!
  • Oh and a pp said ice chips or something cold, I've found this to be helpful as well. I prefer Popsicles when it's unbearable!

Maybe this can be a Pepcid AC vs Zantac thread because I don't have to sleep propped up and if I take a dose before dinner, I don't wake up with it in the middle of the night.
  • The only thing that works for me is gaviscon. Tastes disgusting but brngs relief
  • The first time I choked I found it scary as well .My MD says to take something before it starts.  I was prescribed a high dose of Zantac but still take the low dose over the counter because too much medicine also concern me. I keep a bowl and towel next to the bed for reflex emergencies because I found jumping out of bed quickly makes it worse.
  • Ugh I actually had this last night BAD! I haven't had it thus far. 38 weeks and all hell is breaking loose. Thanks for the water tip, I thought it would help LOL

Been poppin' Pepcid AC since 16 weeks like it's my business.

According to the u/s tech LO has a lot of hair on her head, guess that old wives tale was correct.

  • Oh man. If this is true then my kid is definitely going to come out with hair long enough to braid.
  • I had awful heartburn/reflux for months and tums did absolutely nothing. Once I told my OB she had me start taking the lowest dose of Nexium - 1 pill every morning before breakfast- and it is like a miracle drug. The heartburn basically completely disappeared! I can even eat Mexican again without wanting to die when I go to sleep.
  • I actually have acid reflux so bad it happens even during the day and i will randomly choke on vomit/acid
  • @sbodman82 it sounds to me like you need some Pepcid AC!!

  • I always seem to get my heartburn/nausea when I'm hungry. I make sure to eat before bed and that usually does the trick... Bland food, usually a carb with a big old glass of 2% milk... Mmm
  • Every night around 2-3am. It sucks. Last night it kept me up an hour. Papaya enzymes have been working for me in the day, but for some reason they taste disgusting in the overnight. Trying to hold out on taking a med, but I'm not careful enough with food timing. And when my midwife tells me to space out my eating with my water consumption, of course that makes me feel like I'm dying of thirst when I'm eating. I give up.
  • I am so sorry you are dealing with this! I had the same exact thing as well! Its absolutely awful and scary! I was already past natural remedies like pickles and coconut oil. I'm a very holistic, natural person. But then those stopped working. Next I tired Tums and then even PepcidAC which was at the point of when I started having the acid come up my throat in the middle of the night and during the day. At night time laying on an incline while sleeping slightly helped but it didn't solve the problem. I woke up a few nights in a row choking and coughing on the acid reflux. My midwife finally prescribed me to take Nexium once a day and that has done wonders for me!!! I held out on medications as long as I could, but I just needed relief!

  • So much this.....
Seriously i have tried everything. My doc even wrote me a prescription to take something 4 times a day, and it didnt do a thing.
A combo of zantac and gaviscon and 2 extra strength tums do the trick. But i still sleep propped up and cant drink water before bed.
I think gaviscon is by far the most disgusting medicine EVER, and it nearly made me puke first time taking it, but it was instant relief and it numbs your throat a little.
  • Picked up some Pepcid today and it seems to work. Now I have a little burning instead of feeling like I'm going to Puke fire.

Would you say that you're "team Pepcid"? ;)

Yes gaviscon is SO gross :( but it works.
So a new thing I am trying is cold unsweetened almond milk. It worked today when I got reflux so we will see. Zantac has never worked for me unfortunately
Edit: I was told to try it by a women preg with twins who was like IT IS THE BEST
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one. I was taking a nap, had acid come up and then inhaled by accident. Thought I was about to die.

Doesn't help that I've been binging on tart-ass apple cider and airheads!
  • I miss apple cider.... cant go near it or i WILL puke fire... lmao
  • I miss apple cider.... cant go near it or i WILL puke fire... lmao

Tell me about it! Last weekend, I had a "brilliant" idea for a mini-road trip up into the mountains near us to go to a town that's known for its apple orchards. And so we went, and my husband and I blissfully ate Apple pie, Apple candy, drank Apple cider all day, etc. I was in pain that whole night.

    It sounded good in theory.

  • Zantac 150 works for me. I don't have to take it every day, but since it works in about 30 minutes, I can take it at/after dinner and I'm fine for the night. I had this with DD and with this baby. It is one of those things that went away immediately after birth.
