Bacterial vaginosis

edited November 2015 in January 2016 Moms
I've just been diagnosed with Bacterial Vaginosis after having a vaginal swap done as routine as I was in hospital day clinic with contractions, back ache and vaginal bleeding. That said have no symptoms that are actually associated with BV (discharge etc), I am now on antibiotics but freaking out - I've already gone at least a week and a half (since I've had the swab) before it was discovered and , I know I shouldn't do this, but everything I've read on the Internet stresses about the complications of BV. I know I'm being treated now and I'm sure it'll be fine but I can't help but stress about all the potential complications (premature labour, infection of the amniotic sac, complications with baby and even still birth). Anyone else have this or had this in pregnancy? Also I've heard it often reoccurs :( help.

Re: Bacterial vaginosis

  • I had it with my first pregnancy. I think I was around 25 weeks, i had some spotting so they did a swab and found that I had BV. I took antibiotics and it was gone, mine didn't reoccur, and my son is a happy healthy 4 year old now! I panicked too when I had it but it ended up not being a big deal.

  • I had it 4 times last pregnancy. The only way I knew I had it was because it caused contractions. No other symptoms. and no rhyme or reason as to why I kept getting it.

Nothing this time. It's very random.

  • Had this in my second trimester and my OB prescribed me Metrogel which I can just insert it in my vagina. I had the choice of a pill instead but I thought the gel would be better for me.

I noticed it because I had some itching downstairs and alerted my doctor . I thought it was a yeast infection at first but nope it was BV.

  • I had it with my last pregnancy and twice with this one. Not a big deal, but yes, if left untreated for a long time can cause issues. With my first pregnancy I didn't know for 4 weeks because my phone at the time wasnt showing missed calls or voicemails. Had to go on a stronger dose of meds then but all in all, just routine antibiotics.
  • I wouldn't worry about it! I had it a few weeks ago. I'm sure the cases Google is talking about is in severe situations where it's totally untreated the entire time. But don't freak out because my doctor said it's fairly common during pregnancy! It's not near as big of a deal as you would think. Just take care of it and you'll be perfectly okay.
