Flipping trouble

At 3 weeks old our DD flipped over from her front to back. At her 2 month appointment we told the doc she had only done it 3 times. She said not to worry and laid her on the table where she flipped over...

After the appt she has only 1 other time. Now she is flipping from back to front without trouble but is having trouble going to back again. Does anyone have any tips for me to get her to start flipping again?

Re: Flipping trouble

  • Does she act like she wants to roll? My 3-month-old only rolls when she wants to roll. If she doesn't want to be on her belly then she rolls pretty quickly. Otherwise she just hangs out until her neck gets tired. It might just be that your LO enjoys being on her belly and doesn't actually feel the need to roll. I am actually trying to get LO to roll more often just so that she will get better at it, so I have been doing a lot of cheering any time she flips. She loves al of the praise!

That's actually good I think :) at least she is flipping on her own. Some babies take till 6-8 months to do that. Our PT and OT just said that sometimes babies don't like to flip and they don't like to roll or do tummy time. To just keep working at it, and it will come. Our daughter is 5 months and she doesn't roll or flip on her own.
  • Our son is not a huge fan of tummy time so he will go from his back to his sides (almost to his tummy) then stop. He has no problem tummy to back. I will assist him going from back to belly
  • Since she has started rolling on her own from back to stomach she has loved tummy time. But when she doesn't want on her stomach she freaks out and just cries. She does good at lifting her head up but her hands are usually at the side. I think that is actually her problem. She allows her elbows to get in the way and can't flip over. She has an appointment in a few days, so I'm going to ask our doctor again. I'm pretty sure the doctor will just say she is early anyway so not to worry.
  • My LO can roll both ways, but usually when she rolls onto her belly she gets upset and lays her head down and cries, even though she can roll. Today however she rolled over several times across the blanket. Just give it time, at least you know LO can do it!
