C section infection?

Hello
I had a c section just over 3 weeks ago. Healing well so I thought. Always had a bit of string poking out of one side but was told this would dissolve but may take a while. My OH checked it out after I got out of the shower and it has now gone a bit like a yellow head spot and leaked clear/yellow fluid and smells a little :( I'm ringing my doctor when they open but has anyone else had this? The scar looks to be open a tiny bit behind the string!! Very worried!!

  • Go to your doctor and see if they can remove the extra stitches. I had a small portion of dissolvable stitch that didn't dissolve even though my incision was healed. The nurse practitioner removed it and my incision looks better.

  • I had a few small spots that opened and had some pus and clear drainage. I asked the nurse practitioner about it and she just had me tuck some gauze in my underwear to line up with my incision and wick moisture away. It really helped and after a couple days it healed those spots up. Ask your doc, but hopefully it's a simple fix like mine was.
  • Thank you, I saw my doctor earlier. She had a good feel around my stomach, no problems there. She tried pulling the string but is not yet ready to come out. As the small opening is not leaking anything when she pressed down on it she does not think its infected. She has given me an antibiotic cream to apply 3-4 times a day. Have to keep clean (obviously) and let air get to it to help heal (which I had stopped doing due to my midwife saying last week that its nearly healed) If it starts looking red or painful I have to go back. Fingers crossed this cream helps!
  • I'm on my way to the doc today-incision was healing great then all of a sudden the area around it got really red and I had some clear drainage. I'm hoping it's no big deal but I'm worried it's infected. Glad to see this post though- I was feeling like a messy loser for it being infected!

Mine has been a slow healer too. I did everything I was supposed to, my first c/s with my daughter was healed in a week. This time around, it's been awful. I'm nearly 3 weeks out, and it's red, sore, puffy, leaking clear drainage mixed with a little blood...all of which my PA last week said is normal and to just keep it clean and dry as much as possible. It's really frustrating.

    Good luck.

  • After doc appointment mine wound up not being infected, just irritated from moisture- doc recommended gauze and diaper rash cream. Good luck OP, hope it turned out ok for you.
  • Mine was a little red and had a very slight odor, I realized I wasn't doing a good job keeping it dry. I have a slight skin overhang over my incision and the area sweats, thus moisture. I started drying it multiple times throughout the day and started using alcohol wipes on it again to keep it clean. After showers, I used my hair dryer to dry the area, and also used it off and on throughout the day. Everything was better in two days. You definitely did the right thing checking with your doc, but maybe your hairdryer can help. My nurse insisted on it when I was in the hospital and it was very helpful.
  • I was using my hair dryer but started getting lazy. I'm cleaning the area 3-4 times a day now with water and using the cream using the hair dryer each time :) already starting to look better!! Thanks for everyone's comments :)
