How much milk to keep on hand?

Sorry if this has been asked, but what is a good amount of milk to have stocked up? I'm trying to do at least one 2-4 oz bag a day which would give me about 60-70 or so bags before I go back to work. I know what I pump at work can be used for the next day of day care. But I'm also wanting to start having a bottle ready for night time and don't want to tap into what I have frozen. 60-70 bags is only about a weeks worth of supply. What are your goal amounts to have in storage?

  • Wow, I want to follow this too.  I don't have a good answer though.  I just started pumping after dealing with some feeding/over supply issues.  Now I am starting to get worried about freezer space.

  • Hopefully other mommies can give us some good advice then
  • I don't know that there is a good one size fits all answer. I am exclusively pumping and in a month have managed to have about 500 ounces in the freezer. My milk has taken over our freezers...lol.
I also keep 1-2 days worth of feedings in my fridge and ready to go. I haven't had to use any of my freezer milk yet.
My DD eats about 20 ounces a day and I easily produce 50 ounces a day. With my other children I ended up with about 6 months of frozen milk when I stopped pumping and this worked out best for my family. I also know that some friends have only about 1 week worth of milk in the freezer and a couple of feedings in the fridge and that is it but that works for their families.
  • @mom4liak Wow! That's impressive!  I wish I had the extra time or hands to pump that much extra.  What do you do with your LO when you are pumping.  I find it difficult to pump when LO is awake because she wants to be held a lot or if she's put down on the activity mat/swing/bouncer it's usually only 15 min or so at a time.

Not PP, but I am also exclusively pumping. I pump 6-8 times a day (and still only produce 20-24 ounces). While I pump, I put my legs up on a footstool and LO rests on my legs. I can give him a bottle like this. I can also put him upright high on my chest. I usually start with him laying next to me on the couch, but I usually pick him up.
  • I pump while she nurses until I have about 10 to 15 ounces a day and I have a pretty hefty stock pile for when I go back to work.
  • I only pump 5-6 times a day now. I only pump twice when I am home alone with my LO. I always pump after she has just ate and I usually lay her on the floor for some tummy time. I only pump for 15 minutes during the day. I am lucky enough that my other kids are older and can help out with her if my hubby isn't home. When help is around, I pump for 30ish minutes and massage each breast.
